From Fr. Marty Solma

Dear Brothers:

St. Aloysius Parish - Cleveland

Last Sunday, Aug. 10, Bishop Richard Lennon and I met with members of St. Aloysius Parish in Cleveland to share the news that the Society of Mary will withdraw from the parish and return its administration to the Diocese of Cleveland, effective June 30, 2015.

At the end of Mass I gave some context to the decision. Bishop Lennon and I then met with parish members to hear their comments and questions. This information had been shared with leaders of the parish and our ministry partners in Cleveland. This decision does not affect the Province sponsorship agreement with Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School.

Read the article from the Cleveland diocesan website.

Read a history of Marianist education in Cleveland.

There was sadness as well as appreciation and admiration for the Marianists who have served the parish, especially the four brothers currently at St. Al's: Bros. Paul Hoffman, Will Halloway and Bob Dzubinski and Fr. Ted Cassidy.

This decision is difficult because it ends a long and storied presence of the Society of Mary in Cleveland. It was where many of us met the SM and discerned our vocations.

Although these choices are hard, we are trying to focus on the future, strengthening communities and ministries in several areas of the Province for the sake of mission.

In this case, the Province could not guarantee future personnel to the parish. We wanted a good transition, respecting both the diocese and the parish community, and a well-planned future. The bishop indicated that transitional meetings with the parish will be scheduled through the coming year.

Let us pray for our brothers in Cleveland in the coming year.

Fraternally,

Dear Brothers:

It seems our world could use more prayers for peace. As St. Louis, Iraq, Israel, Palestine, Syria and many other places experience unrest and violence, let us call upon the Trinity, Mary and our communion of saints to intercede for us. The following prayer, "Peace at Last" by John Henry Newman, comes from the Marianist Family Prayer Book:

May God support us all the day long,

            Till the shades lengthen

            And the evening comes

And the busy world is hushed

And the fever of life is over

            And our work is done

            Then in God's mercy

May God give us a safe lodging

            And a holy rest

            And peace at last.

The People's Climate March, anticipated to be the largest in history, will take place on Sunday, Sept. 21 in New York City, but participation is encouraged everywhere. This international interfaith event relates to our Province commitment to integrity of creation.

On Sept. 23, heads of state from around the world will attend the "Climate Summit 2014" at the United Nations. Countries have agreed on the need for a meaningful, universal, legal climate agreement by the next United Nations Climate Change Conference in 2015. The UN Secretary-General is convening this summit to mobilize action before 2015, and to increase political will for greater action.

Please let me know if you want to attend the People's Climate March in New York on Sept. 21, or if you want to get involved locally. Due to other Province responsibilities, I am not able to attend the march in New York; however, I will help coordinate as needed for those interested in attending.
