From Fr. Marty Solma

Dear Brothers:

NEWS FROM LOS ANGELES

For some time now, we have been working to implement the recommendations of the West Coast Task Force to establish a new community in Central Los Angeles. I met with Archbishop Gomes in February and since then have spoken with others in the archdiocese. We have completed the house extension and have identified the first regular community.

The new Lalanne Community at University Park will be comprised of Bros. David Murphy and Norman Capinpin and Frs. Ken Templin and Jim Heft. Jim will continue his ministry with the Institute for Advanced Catholic Studies. The other community members will be involved at Junipero Serra High School, a ministry long associated with the Society of Mary which serves a primarily African-American and Hispanic student body. We also plan an intentional outreach to Catholic students at the University of Southern California with a focus on vocation ministry.

Please pray for God's blessings on this new Province venture, one that has a promise of vocational discernment and ministry among a less-served community, both goals recommended by the West Coast Task Force.

NORTH CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL

On a less happy note, the recent distribution of letters to alums of North Catholic High School in the wake of allegations against Bernard Hartman has surfaced other names of Marianists accused of improper conduct. Most of these date from the 1950s and 1960s, and those named are now either deceased or have left the Society of Mary. Joe and I are meeting with our Review Board to craft a response, both to the individuals who have come forward and to the Diocese of Pittsburgh. I would be grateful for your prayers.

EXTENDED GENERAL COUNCIL

The recent Extended General Council in Rome reviewed the results of the first consultation on zonal reconfiguration and have prepared a proposal for a second consultation of unit leadership. The results of this second consultation will be reviewed by the Extended General Council next year to prepare for the General Leadership Assembly which will make decisions about future zonal configuration.

DISTRICT OF INDIA

I ask your prayers this week for the meeting of the members of the District of India who have been ordained fewer than five years, a fine initiative on the part of the District. They are being assisted by Fr. Andr Ftis from the General Administration and Bro. Stephen Glodek from our Office of Formation for Mission. Together with the Kairos leadership program, organized and presented by Bro. Tom Giardino and Savio Franco, this meeting will deepen the sense of mission in the District and strengthen ministry and community leadership.

Wishing you an Easter season filled with paschal peace and joy.

Fraternally,

From Bro. Joe Kamis

My Dear Brothers:

On June 4, Bro. Armando Aeses will begin his seminary studies in Rome. This summer he will join the other new seminarians in Urbania at the Center for Italian Studies where they will study Italian before beginning formal theological studies in the fall. We wish Armando buon viaggio and promise him our prayers.

MINISTRY BURNOUT

I had the opportunity to hear Dr. Steve Carroll speak at a conference. I was impressed by his insight and compassion about the stress of ministerial life and the vocation of consecrated life.

Do yourself a favor and register for the live webinar or "on demand" viewing of "Practicing What We Preach: Preventing Ministry Burnout."

NOLAN CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL

More than 100 guests honored four Marianists who soon will be departing Nolan Catholic High School in Ft. Worth.

Nolan's board hosted a reception and dinner on May 17 as the Marianists end their service there. Members of the faculty, staff and board paid tribute to Fr. Rich Villa, president, Fr. Bob Hackel and Bros. Hugh Charlson and  Al Kuntemeier, and to the many Marianists who have served at Nolan for more than 50 years.

Bro. Al, Fr. Rich, Bro. Hugh, Fr. Bob

Many faculty and staff members told me that the brothers have continued to teach by example in the difficult circumstances of the last few months.

Stephen Nemeth, a teacher at Nolan for 30 years, offered reflections on what the Marianists have meant to him and to many who have passed through the halls of the school:

"Imbued with the spirit of the Gentle-Woman, Mary, these men, whom I have looked upon as grandfathers, fathers, uncles, and certainly brothers, have imbued me and many others with their distinctive spirituality, their generous pedagogies, and their compassion for others. Their gifts have been given freely with a smile. For all of us, dear brothers, I bow in profound gratitude and ask for Mary's blessings upon you and your future works."

Thank you to all Province members who have served at Nolan and particularly to Richard, Al, Bob and Hugh for their great examples.

BRO. ANDY KOSMOWSKI

Bro. Tom Wendorf and I attended the graduation ceremony for Bro. Andy Kosmowski on May 18. Andy received his master's degree in library science from the University of Missouri. Congratulations to Andy!

IMMIGRATON RESOURCES FOR PENTECOST

The Conference of Major Superiors of Men (CMSM), working with Catholic coalition partners in the U.S. Catholic Bishops' Justice for Immigrants Campaign, has developed Pentecost resources that provide prayerful action opportunities for June 1-8, 2014.

We've been told that June/July might be the last chance for legislation before the elections, so the time for increased advocacy and prayer is now.

MARIANIST GALLERIES

The Marianist Galleries building on the campus of St. John Vianney High School in St. Louis, which began as a caretaker's cottage and became a creative force in the art world under the direction of the late Bro. Mel Meyer, will transition to the mission of Vianney.

Artwork will be sold at the galleries until July 19; after that date, a selection of Bro. Mel's artwork showcasing his life will be on permanent display, and will remain the property of the Province. Bro. Brian Zampier, who has faithfully continued at the galleries, will be on sabbatical from September through December.

Bro. Mel was the resident artist at the "cottage" beginning in 1969. He added the A-frame studio and the two-story addition in the 1970s. Other artists in residence at the galleries over the years include Bros. Gerry Hyland, Steve Erspamer, Tom Suda and Cletus Behlmann.

An Open House to celebrate and remember the artists and the galleries is scheduled for Friday, June 13. All brothers are invited; others by invitation only.

PRINT OPEN HOUSE INVITATION.
