My Dear Brothers:

CONSULTATION FOR PRIESTHOOD

The Provincial Council is considering the assignment of Bro. Armando Aeses to the seminary in Rome to complete prerequisite studies in philosophy during the 2013-2014 academic year; he would begin theological studies fall 2014.

Brothers who have lived with Armando in community during the past three years have been emailed a letter with the required consultation. We now open the consultation to any perpetually professed brother who would like to respond.

Using the link below, please give the Provincial Council the benefit of your wisdom in discerning the readiness of Armando for assignment to the seminary. Please consider the following qualities that should characterize those called to the priesthood in the Society of Mary:

  • a strong desire to serve his fellow brothers;
  • a love of community life and a unifying influence in the community;
  • a desire to know and practice Marianist spirituality;
  • an inclination and aptitude for leading community, prayer and liturgy;
  • an aptitude for serving as spiritual director, homilist and minister of the sacraments;
  • a sense of the Church and fidelity to it;
  • a genuine interest in cooperating with his fellow brothers in working together for the mission of the Province and the local community.

This form should be returned to my office by Feb. 22, 2013. You may email me your thoughts, fax your sheet to 314.533.0778 or mail the sheet to me at 4425 West Pine Blvd., St. Louis, MO 63108. Many thanks!

Lenten message

 As we begin this holy season of Lent in the Year of Faith, and the "Reflect" year of our Province renewal, I offer the Holy Father's Lenten message for your reflection, prayer and community faith-sharing (see the link below).

This is Pope Benedict, the master teacher, at his best, systematically presenting the virtues of faith and charity; but so helpful in the spiritual quest of opening ourselves more fully to the passionate love that God has for each of us, rekindling our faith so that we can keep loving like Jesus in concrete ways.

May this little thing we do, our humble acceptance of ashes, remind us of our deepest desire for the acceptance of the love of God and being that love for all of our brothers and sisters.

LENTEN MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS BENEDICT XVI

Resource material for election of a new pope

The world recently learned of the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI. In times of transition and change, the Church calls us to be vigilant in prayer. This is a time to give thanks for the pope and his pontificate, and to pray for the Church as a new pope is elected.

The Secretariat of Divine Worship of the United States Council of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has prepared a resource guide to assist dioceses, parishes and other groups in prayer and thanksgiving in this transition. The resource includes liturgical notes and other resource material, including:

  • Liturgical instructions and suggestions for special Masses
  • Homily suggestions
  • Prayers of the Faithful
  • Eucharistic prayer
  • Liturgy of Hours
  • Musical resources

The Office of Religious Life encourages each community to review this resource and to incorporate some of the suggestions in the spiritual life of the community.

Correction

Please note that the Chapter report from the Office of Religious Life has an error regarding a retreat date. (The dates listed in the retreat brochure are correct.)

The dates for the retreat at the Oblates in San Antonio this summer are July 21 - 27, 2013. I apologize for the error.
