Barely one month in as Search for Common Ground's new president, I am heartbroken that one of our West African team members has died from Ebola. Three more were killed in the hysteria-driven violence the disease unleashed.

These losses drive home the tragedy of the crisis in a deeply personal way for us. But even for those with no direct ties to West Africa, as the first patient diagnosed on U.S. soil fights for his life, we are forced to recognize the epidemic is not "their" problem. It's ours too.

After 15 years working in every district of Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea, Search is well-placed to tackle a root cause of the crisis: the profound trust-gap undercutting the medical response. This is why local leaders turned to us to help lead the fight against Ebola.
