July 9, 2013

I put aside my weighty cares and leave my wearisome toils for a while. I abandon myself to you, O God, and rest for a little in you.

I enter the inner chamber of my soul, and seek only God and the things that can help me in my quest for you.

Come then, Lord my God, teach my heart where and how to look for you, where and how to find you.

- after St Anselm (1033-1109)

Is your congregation registered?

Moving to new ways of doing things can be confusing but ultimately is worth the effort. With the changes being made in the registration process for Diocesan Convention this year, we thought it best to present a list of those churches that currently have completed all three parts of the registration process: lay member certificate, online registration, and payment of registration fees.

Churches that have successfully competed all three parts of the process are:
  • St. James', Batavia
  • St. Andrew's, Burt
  • St. Matthias', East Aurora
  • Trinity, Fredonia
  • Trinity, Hamburg
  • St. Paul's, Harris Hill
  • St. Paul's, Holley
  • St. Luke's, Jamestown
  • Trinity, Lancaster
  • St. Mark's, LeRoy
  • St. Mark's, Orchard Park
  • Holy Apostles', Perry
  • Grace, Randolph
  • Trinity, Warsaw
  • St. John's, Youngstown
If the name of your church does not appear above, please contact Alice Brown at 716-881-0660 x12 to find out what yet needs to be done.

Here's Hook for News & Action

August 28 is the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington

In 1963 more than 200,000 people went to Washington, D.C. and proved that protests don't need to be violent to be powerful. The group's leaders led a march from the Washington Monument to the Lincoln Memorial and stood for hours in the August heat as musicians and speakers appealed for equal rights for African Americans. Thanks to powerful words from civil rights champions, including Martin Luther King Jr.'s famed "I Have a Dream" speech, the march became a seminal event in leading to the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Here's a brief, newly published memoir from the Rev. Malcolm Boyd related to the assassination of Medgar Evers, which also happened in 1963. Boyd is well know as the author of a book of prayers entitled Are You Running with Me, Jesus? (1965) and many subsequent works. Boyd was born in Buffalo in 1923. After his parents divorced in the 30s, he moved West with his mother.

As we remember those that worked tirelessly in the name of equal rights, we must also continue to work as one Church to further equality. We are reminded to seek to transform unjust structures of society, to challenge violence of every kind and to pursue peace and reconciliation (Mark 4 of the Five Marks of Mission). Though we have come a long way throughout the past 50 years, we still have a long way to go.

Highlight what your church community has done, is planning to do, and what parishioners can do to make their Church and community a welcoming place for all God's children. Also, plan and announce participation in the Episcopal Church's Racism in America: Fifty Years Later forum coming in November.

For help in sharing your news with the media, contact diocesan communication officer Laurie Wozniak at 716-881-0660 x22 or email communication@episcopalwny.org.

Bracelets Help!

Before church events at which photos will be taken give children colorful bracelets to wear. Those whose images can be used should be given bracelets of one color, while children whose images cannot be used are given another. Bracelets can be as simple as a band of colored paper, or you can buy a large supply of plastic bracelets kept on had for just such occasions before the next program year begins.  Here's one place to get them.

Order yours today!

Bishop Franklin invites everyone in the diocese to read the book Unabashedly Episcopalian by Bishop Andrew Doyle. It is his hope that Bishop Doyle's words will help to spark energy, creativity and new ideas as our diocese strives make an impact in the 21st century.

"Open Unabashedly Episcopalian and prepare to be inspired, taught and motivated. Andy Doyle has mined the Baptismal Covenant and his own experiences as bishop of the Diocese of Texas to offer a heartfelt, smart and practical book that calls Episcopalians to wake up to the church's unique gifts and story, and equips them to share that witness in their neighborhoods and out in the world."       from book cover

Through a special arrangement with the publisher, we are able to place a bulk order for this book and offer it to members of the diocese for just $10.00 per copy. But first, we need to know how many books to order!

You may order your book individually or through your church if the church plans to place a congregational order. The August 1st deadline for the receipt of orders is the same either way.

Books will be delivered to churches around Labor Day.  No books will be mailed to individuals.

Download the order form.

Planning is well underway!

Registration is Open

The traditional Convention Packets have been mailed. However, it is important to note that our diocese is joining the overwhelming number of dioceses across the church that conduct Convention Registration online.

Clergy, lay delegates and alternates, as well as visitors may use this portal to secure their Convention Registration.

If you are a parish administrator who is simply registering your church's clergy and delegates, be sure to select the "Not Attending Convention" option under fees.

Please note that online registration does not supplant submission of the Lay Member Certificate required by church canons.

Electronic files of this certificate and all other Convention materials currently available may be downloaded from
