FUNdraising for Churches

By Franklin David

Raising money to raise up churches is an important leadership skill for pastors. Like most pastors, my formal training in fund raising is limited, and yet through the years I have learned five important strategies for financing a capital campaign. While these five strategies might not be worth a penny to some, they have helped me to raise nearly six million dollars.

A Church Pastor's Dream List

By Gordon Botting

Twenty-five years ago I served as pastor of a large metropolitan church. At first glance, this church was a magnificent edifice with a large one-of-a-kind pipe organ; a three-tier sanctuary; and two 30-foot-high motifs, imported from Italy, depicting the three angels of Revelation and the Second Advent.

However, in contrast to its beauty and dignity, the church lacked the basics for encouraging members and the community to come abd be part of the congregation.  Read More

Andre Goncalves wins the iPad in the NAD Ministerial Survey Drawing

"I can't believe it," said Andre Goncalves when he was informed that his name was drawn in the NAD Ministerial survey drawing. Goncalves pastors a two church district in Texas Conference.  He is an avid reader of Best Practices for Adventist Ministry and is looking forward to reading CALLED digital magazine for NAD Pastors. His name was drawn by Assistant to the President Ken Denslow from a pool of almost 600 people who responded to the NAD Ministerial Survey.

"I want to thank all of those pastors who took the time to fill out the survey" says Dave Gemmell, Associate Director of NAD Ministerial. "This groundbreaking survey will help us serve NAD pastors more effectively."  The survey asked NAD pastors their opinions about how best to grow the core competencies of the pastors in the NAD. Gemmell will be sharing the results of the survey in future issues of Best Practices.

Improving Your Leadership:

Identifying and Engaging Influencers

By William Davis

After twenty five years of equipping ministry I have come to the conclusion that "Leadership" can be summed up in one word, influence. John Maxwell puts it this way, "The true measure of leadership is influence...nothing more, nothing less.

I have found that to lead people in groups of any size it is crucial to both identify and engage the influencers among them. I find that in a congregation there are influencers both outside and inside the group. Outside influencers may consist of members' family, friends, culture and society. While all of these may play a role of influence as long as they are outside the group they are secondary sources. It is within the group that I find individuals who exercise influence in significant ways.  Read More

THE FOOLISHNESS OF PREACHING

Military Bible Kits are offered by Adventist Chaplaincy Ministries (ACM) for Adventists serving in the armed forces to help link them to the church during challenging periods in their lives. The MBK reminds them that their church cares. Pastors or elders are encouraged to present the kit to a young adult Adventist entering the armed forces during a Sabbath service. After encouraging the young adult to be faithful to Christ and witness for Jesus in their new journey, the pastor or elder might offer a prayer of dedication and then present the kit as a gift from the church. Churches can get the kits from a local or union conference or ACM and also from AdventSource (800-328-0525).
