Caring For Pastors-Part II
The Essential Work of Ministerial Directors

"Establishing Sabbatical Programs"

Does your conference have a sabbatical program?  If not, I certainly recommend your pursuit to establish a program in your conference. Why a Sabbatical program? A sabbatical program signals to every pastor someone cares about their journey. It is a resource of preventive care and renewal for the Seventh-day Adventist pastor.

Because church members often see the public part of being a pastor such as chairing the church board or business meetings, preaching, marrying couples, and other related activities, the fact remains that being a pastor involves many hours every week of behind the scenes and sometimes very high pressure, although routine work like running from one hospital to another, trying to prepare sermons, etc.

Sabbatarian theology shouts rest, and the objective of a Sabbatical program is to encourage pastors to take time for renewal and spiritual regeneration. A sabbatical should involve five specific areas that include first, a time for personal and family renewal. This is for the purpose of reconnecting and reestablishing true one on one relationships that go much deeper than just surface living or involvement in the same house.

Secondly, the sabbatical should include physical, intellectual, and emotional restoration that will help to improve the pastor's functionality, spirituality, and personal introspection. The sabbatical should include time for the pastor to develop in new areas professionally. Professional growth is essential in the process of renewal because it allows the pastor to be stretched for growth, and it takes the pastor out
of the repetitive cycles of the week.

facebook page.

Stan Patterson entitled,
"The Upside Down Church".

Description: We are born with the intuitive tendency to look up to find authority. Our accountability is likewise to that authority that is above us. We dream and urge our differentiation in the direction that will place us above--not below. Lucifer leveraged that natural tendency when he interjected the ascendant/dominance drive into the core of humanity at the fall. "I will ascend" emanated from the heart of Lucifer in his quest for dominance and has had a ubiquitous impact upon all humanity.

Jesus left the heights of glory on a downward journey of service that took him all the way to the depths of the grave to serve our need to be redeemed. This descendant/service model is countercultural in our sinful world yet the Master asks us to model it in our dealing with others. "The first shall be last" and "the least shall be your minister" is more than paradox, it is a clear expectation of God for the church. Jesus turned the church upside down! Authority is vested in the people and flows up--not down from leaders. Leaders exercise loaned authority and will never be able claim or own personal authority. Our accountability is also counter intuitive. Leaders in the church look down for accountability--not up.

Finding a way to embrace this upside down model is not easy. Organizational structure all around us exists in the context of the hierarchical model. Even the church is influenced by this model in its practice of leadership and organizational behavior.

The purpose of this webinar is to introduce you to a different model that will reintroduce the servant model that discovers greatness by going down--not up.

A Leadership Read
Study after study confirms that career development is the single most powerful tool managers have for driving retention, engagement, productivity, and results. Nevertheless, it's frequently back-burnered. When asked why, managers say the number one reason is that they just don't have time-for the meetings, the forms, the administrative hoops.

A Point to Make
Pastors are needed--faithful shepherds--who will not flatter God's people, nor treat them harshly, but who will feed them with the bread of life--men who in their lives feel daily the converting power of the Holy Spirit and who cherish a strong, unselfish love toward those for whom they labor.  {AA 526.1}
