Caring For Pastors-Part I
The Essential Work of Ministerial Directors

"Clarifying Role in Ministry"

Understanding the complex role of contemporary pastors gives insight into the necessity for spiritual connection, emotional care, and physical awareness. This is essential and important to life balance in the professional journey of Adventist pastors. Lloyd Rediger sees role as all encompassing or engulfing. In fact, he sees the pastors role as the only profession whereby their professional, personal, and religious faith are all wrapped up in a single package.

In other words, there is no escaping who we are and what we do except through anonymity.  People in other vocations can at least escape into their religious faith when the pressure is on.  But pastors must face the pressure with their work and faith wrapped altogether. Their call to ministry will always precede their response in declaration to the call.

H. B. London, Jr. and Neil B. Wiseman, in their book Your Pastor Is an Endangered Species, describes this dilemma in everyday church life as the persistent struggle for pastors to find a meaningful existence amidst greater demands, low credibility, suspicious followers, and needy members. Adventist pastors are often tugged between the hierarchical organizations (conference) desire, their private personal convictions, unrealistic congregational expectations, community endeavors, and family needs.

Unrealistic expectations can be detrimental to pastors. Helping them with the sorting and clarifying of these expectations will give them staying power...

Helping pastors clarify their professional role and helping them sort through unrealistic expectations is the essential work of ministerial directors.

NEW EVANGELISM RESOURCE COMING SOON

"The Record Keeper," which dramatizes the epic struggle between good and evil, is a soon to be web series which echoes major themes from "The Great Controversy," a touchstone book by Adventist Church co-founder Ellen G. White that chronicles God's guidance throughout history.

The episodes and media package plans will be shared at the upcoming NAD Adventist Ministries Convention in Monterey, California, January 12-15, 2014.  These plans will give pastors the ability to use this series creatively as an evangelism tool to reach individuals for Christ.

The Record Keeper recently won an award in the "Best One-Shot" category for "Best Trailer." The "One-Shot" category recognizes episodes still in the final stages of post-production.  Director Jason Satterlund, owner of Big Puddle Films and Executive Producer Garrett Caldwell, Public Relations Director of the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists accepted the award, accompanied by cast members Aris Juson and Jelynn Sophia.

Advanced screenings of "The Record Keeper" are expected to begin in October, producers said.

"We can't wait to show you the rest of the series," Caldwell said, acknowledging the role of co-creator Rajeev Sigamoney and the two other executive producers, Ben Schoun and Delbert Baker, both general vice presidents for the Adventist world church.

Church leaders said "The Record Keeper" will resonate with people who may not otherwise come into contact with "The Great Controversy" or even the Bible.

"The inspired insights that Ellen White provides in 'The Great Controversy' make the compelling narratives of scripture even more relevant," Caldwell said. "So many people are expressing interest in [White] as an individual and in her writings as a result of 'The Record Keeper' project. We simply must consider continuing to tell these stories in this manner."

A Point to Make
The sin that leads to the most unhappy results is the cold, critical, unforgiving spirit that characterizes Pharisaism. When the religious experience is devoid of love, Jesus is not there; the sunshine of His presence is not there. . . . There may be a wonderful keenness of perception to discover the defects of others; but to everyone who indulges this spirit, Jesus says, "Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye" (Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, pp. 125, 126).
