Teams will pick up trash along the shore of Lake Crabtree and its connecting creeks. Gloves, bags and other supplies are provided by the park.
We'll raffle off prizes and learn why it's important to educate others about litter. Individuals and groups are welcome.
Make a difference in your community! Preregistration is required. Call 919-460-3355 to sign up.

November Preview

On Friday, November 7,

from 5 to 7 p.m. Lake Crabtree will be hosting its first Night Paddle. Participants will get the unique opportunity to experience the lake after dark. Glow sticks, life jackets, and all other equipment will be provided. We wanted to give our subscribers the heads-up as if it's anything like our Sunset Canoe Trip, spaces will go fast! This program is for adults only and is $5/person.

Preregistration is required. Mail in a form with payment to sign up. Please specify what type of boat you would like on your registration form (tandem canoe, tandem kayak, solo kayak). If you are registering with another adult, please choose a tandem boat.

Volunteer Opportunities

Lake Crabtree County Park has year-round opportunities for volunteers interested in gaining community service hours, scout projects, or simply being good stewards.

We have scheduled events for volunteers like our Fall and Spring Big Sweeps (see block to the left) or the brand new Fall Garden Day (see the block below) on Sunday, October 5 where we invite participants to help us get our garden ready for fall. We'll trim the old plants and add some new ones. Along the way, we'll share some tips for keeping your garden green and blooming into autumn, attracting wildlife, and making sure you're ready for spring.

We also have opportunities for motivated adults as well as organized groups. At this time, we do not accept individual volunteers under the age of 18. Please contact the Lake Crabtree County Park office at 919-460-3390 or [email protected] to inquire about scheduling a volunteer opportunity for you or your group.

Lake Crabtree County Park also offers organized groups (schools, scouts, etc.) the opportunity to earn a free environmental education program in exchange for volunteer service hours.  Call Colleen Bockhahn at 919-460-2723 for more information.

The Wild Side:
Moths

North Carolina has 174 species of butterflies, but over 2000 different kinds of moths. That's more than ten times as many! In fact, moths are estimated to be the third most speciose of the insect orders, right after beetles and flies. Moths and butterflies belong to the order Lepidoptera, and moths make up 80% of that order.

Yet, despite all this diversity, moths are still poorly understood. Their (typically) nocturnal habits leave much of their biology and behaviors shrouded in mystery.

If you're curious about moths, we will be offering a program about them on Friday, October 24 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. This night program will investigate several methods for trapping moths and we will discuss ways to attract them to your backyard as well as how to identify. If you want to sign up, just mail in a form with payment ($3/person or $5/family) to do so.
