National Trails Day

Saturday, June 1

9 a.m. - Noon

Join staff from REI and Blue Jay Point Park to work on Blue Jay's trails--all in honor of National Trails Day!  In addition to get-down-and-dirty work with trail tools, there will be family-friendly mulching projects for kids as well.  You must pre-register for this workday!

Are you a mountain biker, or do you just like to do volunteer trail work?


TORC will be hosting a workday at North Wake Landfill District Park on Saturday, June 22 beginning at 9:30 am. The main focus will be stabilization of a trail crossing as well as some general trail upkeep. Participants should park in the trail access parking lot, the first paved lot on the left side of the concrete roadway. Blue Jay Staff saw our first documented sighting of an Eastern Chipmunk in front of the Education Center this month. Let us know if you see it too--especially if you see more
than one!
Looking for something fun to do this Saturday (Memorial Weekend)?
  • Family Wildlife Series  "Pressed for Thyme" 
    • Cater to your creativity while exploring the different areas of Blue Jay's Garden. Sniff the herbs in the herb garden, learn what poison ivy looks like, investigate our pizza garden and log garden (OK now--how many of you can say you have a pizza garden---but you could!)  Preserve your memories (and a few flowers) by making a flower press for your family to take home.  I understand that there MIGHT even be some water garden exploration if time allows!
    • For all ages, but activities and information are most appropriate for ages 5 and up.
    • Saturday, May 25th  2-3:30pm 
    • Fee: $5/family

June Public Programs
  • Nature Stories "Millipede Mania" (Saturday--call to register!)
    • Millipedes, centipedes and pillbugs, too. Come and discover the down-and-under world of multiple marching feet. Count them and feel them tickle, and make a roll-up craft of your own
    • For ages 3-5 and grown-up
    • Wed, June 5th 1-2p.m. or Sat. June 8th 10 - 11 a.m.
    • Fee:  $4 per parent/child pair


  • Nature Crafts "Father Knows Best"
    • Learn about animal fathers and their various roles in nature as you make recycled Father's Day cards to take home.
    • For ages 6-8 (drop-off program)
    • Sat. June 15th 1-3 p.m.
    • Fee: $8

  •  Family Wildlife Series "

    For Goodness Snakes!"


      Loved, hated, sometimes overlooked, but never ignored!  Snakes are an often-misunderstood group.  Most snakes are harmless, but all play a special part in our ecosystem.  Come and learn more about this amazing group of reptiles.
    • For all ages, but activities and information are most appropriate for ages 5 and up.
    • Saturday, June 22   2 - 3:30 p.m.

North Wake Landfill District Park is ready for the day. 
Every third weekend and some holidays.

    • Glass baby food jars!
    • Cigar Boxes--all sizes
    • Very clean and dry gable-topped soy milk or orange juice cartons
    • Items may be dropped off at the Education Center office between 8am and 5pm Mon-Sat
