The Wild Side: Reptile Weather
No, I don't mean that it's raining frogs and toads (which are amphibians by the way, not reptiles). I mean it's finally warm enough for us to start seeing scaly critters out and about. Reptiles are commonly known as "cold-blooded" which means they have to rely on external heat sources to maintain their body temperature. What that means is these animals can only be as warm as their surrounding environment. So, the proper term is 'ectothermic' ( ecto meaning outside, therm meaning heat) because in eighty-degree weather, a reptile (this includes snakes, lizards, turtles, crocodilians, and tuataras) will have a body temperature of eighty degrees, and that's hardly cold, now is it? One popular local ectotherm are turtles. Lake Crabtree is home to a variety of turtles, and if you'd like to know more about them check out our Turtle Power program on Sunday, May 26 at 1 p.m. This program requires preregistration. Mail or email in the registration form to sign up. Call (919) 460-3355 if you have any questions.
