ChapterOfficesCandidates Sought for 2014-2015 Chapter Offices

Are you ready for an exciting leadership opportunity? More and more employers want candidates with solid leadership skills and leading the STC Chicago Chapter offers an excellent opportunity to gain and hone those skills.

The nominating committee is still accepting Vice President office nominations, and encourages more candidates to run for the Secretary, Treasurer, and nominating committee positions. The STC Chicago Chapter elections begin in early April.

The Vice President serves for one year, becoming president in 2015 and Immediate Past President the following year. The Secretary and Treasurer are elected for a one-year term. Members of the nominating committee serve a two-year term. All terms begin in July 2014.

If you or someone you know is interested in one of these positions, please contact the committee at nominating@stc-chicago.org.

ScholarshipSTC Chicago Awards Two Student Scholarships

The Scholarship Committee is pleased to announce that STC Chicago has awarded two scholarships. Tracy Castro received our top scholarship of $1,000 and an STC membership. Kerri Kowalewksi-Halawa received our second scholarship of $500 and an STC membership.

Tracy Castro
Tracy is focusing on technical communication as a part of the A.A. transfer program at the College of Lake County. In the Spring of 2015 she will transfer to Southern Illinois University to complete her bachelor's degree in Workplace Education and Development.

Tracy's application grabbed the judges' attention with her high quality writing samples. Each sample demonstrated a solid understanding of the principals of technical communication.

Tracy recently joined Aon where she hopes to explore new roles using the technical communication skills she acquired throughout her studies. You may recognize Tracy. She was awarded the 2013 STC Chicago Scholarship last year.

Kerri Kowalewski-Halaway
Kerri is pursuing her masters in Writing, Rhetoric, and Discourse at DePaul University. She plans to use the skills she develops to make the world a better place and hopes to land a position with a nonprofit.

The judges were particularly impressed with Kerri's collaborative report on improving the usability of the Center for Better Healthcare website.

Please join us in congratulating both Tracy and Kerri. Both will be honored at the upcoming awards banquet on March 20th. Register today!

GetRealGet Real! A Professional Interview Program

We're excited to announce an upcoming addition to the STC Chicago program offering!

In the next few months, we'll be launching an informational interview service for students and recent graduates new to or considering the field of technical communication. Students can request an interview and we'll match them with a senior technical communicator in our chapter for a 30- to 60-minute in-person or phone interview.

Would you like to be interviewed? Could you answer questions about what this work is like, what skills are needed, and more? We're looking to add some more interviewees to our roster of volunteers. Volunteer today! Send an email to interview@stc-chicago.com

ScienceFairJudges Needed for Chicago Non-Public Schools Science Exposition

STC Chicago is sponsoring the Chicago Non-Public Schools Science Exposition. We're awarding monetary awards to two entries that our judges vote on.

We're also looking for one or two volunteers who would like to go to the Museum of Science and Industry on Saturday, March 8th or Sunday, March 9th to judge the entries and present the awards. These awards enable the recognition of excellent science projects.

When viewing the project posters, consider the following questions:
  • Is the layout clean and attractive?
  • Do the graphics make sense?
  • Do you understand the writing, style, and tone?
  • Are steps numbered, and do they use correct punctuation and terminology?
The fair is held Saturday, March 8 beginning at 9:00 am. The award presentation is on Sunday, March 9 from 2:00 - 3:00 pm. You could attend one or both days, and you get free admittance to the museum!

If you're interested in judging this event, email president@stc-chicago.com no later than Wednesday, March 5.
