                                                        November 2015
Greetings From the Director

The Concord Free Public Library
(CFPL) has just adopted a new library logo (see left), which is the result of a thoughtful and collaborative design process. A special thanks to all who provided ideas and feedback toward the development of this attractive design.

In October, the CFPL received a $7,500 LSTA Full Steam Ahead Grant from the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, which will enable the Library to offer STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) related programming for children and teens over the course of the year. This initiative is off to a great start with the recent scarecrow festival, story walks, cardboard challenge, and bulb plantings. Please visit the Library website over the coming months for additional related program announcements.

Also of note in November is a new monthly cookbook club where participants will make and share recipes. The details of the kick-off event with cookbook author, Nina Simonds are included in this newsletter.

In late November our colleague, Mary Taylor will retire after 19+ years of service in the Main Library Children's Department. Please join us in thanking Mary and wishing her an enjoyable next chapter by stopping by for cake and fellowship in the Children's Room on Thursday, November 12th from 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

                              Best wishes,

                                ----- Kerry Cronin

2016 Concord Reads Ballot

The Library staff have begun to plan for the next community-wide read, Concord Reads. Concord Reads is an invitation to all community members to read the same book and attend related programs.  The next Concord Reads will take place during the month of March 2016.

We have narrowed the 2016 Concord Reads options to five finalists and you are invited to vote. Starting November 3, 2015, printed ballots will be available at the Main Library and Fowler.  In addition, an online version of the ballot will be available on the library home page. We look forward to tallying up the results.  The selected title will be announced in early January.

NEW! Cookbook Club

The Library is starting a new book group called Cookbook Club!

The first meeting of the Cookbook Club is Tuesday, November 10 at 12:30 p.m. in the Main Library Trustees' Room.

Each month we select a cookbook. The Library will have multiple copies of the selected cookbook at the circulation desk. Each member checks a copy out and brings it home to read.  Then they select one recipe to prepare at home and bring to the following meeting.

The first cookbook is Spices of Life: Simple and Delicious  Recipes for Great Health by Nina Simonds. Ms. Simonds is a local author and will be present at the meeting to talk to the group about her start in cooking, authorship, and travel. [Read More About the Author]

Pre-registration is required. [Register]

Stay tuned for our December session if this one is full!

Sunday Poetry Reading

Sunday Poetry Reading will kick off the new season on Sunday, November 15, at 3:00 p.m. in the Main Library Trustees' Room with a reading by Jay Deshpande, author of Love the Stranger (YesYes Books, 2015).

Jay has held residencies at the Saltonstall Arts Colony and the Vermont Studio Center and was selected by Billy Collins for the 2015 Scotti Merrill Memorial Award at the Key West Literary Seminar. His poems have appeared in Boston Review, Sixth Finch, Atlas Review, Handsome, Spork, Prelude, and elsewhere. Essays and reviews have been published in Slate, The New Republic, The Millions, and Publishers Weekly.

Jay holds degrees from Harvard and Columbia and has taught in Egypt, France, and the United States.  Born in Austin, Texas, he now lives in Brooklyn.
