Immunotherapy: A Powerful New Cancer Treatment

On October 1 at 11 am, Noble Horizons will host Dr. Debra Brandt, of Yale Smilow Cancer Hospital, who will present, "Immunotherapy: A Powerful New Cancer Treatment."

Cancer cells are able to thrive because they can hide from the human body's disease fighting immune system which locates, recognizes and attacks infectious invaders.  Immunotherapy is an innovative treatment that empowers the body's own natural defenses to fight cancer and eliminate cancer cells when they form. Unlike chemotherapy, which kills cancer cells, immunotherapy acts on the cells of the immune system to help them attack the cancer.  Dr. Steven Rosenberg, Chief of Surgery at the National Cancer Institute explains, "Think of how dauntingly personalized this is.  We are using their own cells to treat a unique mutation in their own tumor."  Immunotherapy has produced remarkable results for patients with leukemia and other blood cancers and is heralded for it potential to treat many other cancers.

Dr. Brandt did her fellowship at Yale School of Medicine and has been in practice for 18 years.  She is a recipient of Connecticut Magazine's : Best Doctor in Connecticut Award as Chosen by Peers.  Registration for Dr. Brandt's free program is at www.noblehorizons.org or 860-435-9851.  Noble Horizons is located at 17 Cobble Road in Salisbury, CT.
