It looks certain that Lime Rock is going to have really good "racing weather" for this weekend's IMSA WeatherTech Northeast Grand Prix. It will be hot and sunny, but not too humid - perfect "stock your cooler, bring the lawn chair and park yourself in the shade of a tree" conditions!
Race day is Saturday, July 23. You can buy tickets at the gate -- and remember that veterans and active military are free, and kids 16 and under are free with accompanying adult(s). Parking is free, too. (You can also purchase Print-at-Home online)
IMSA WeatherTech is world-class international sports car racing - most of these cars and drivers are the same ones that race at the Rolex Daytona 24, the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring, the Le Mans 24 Hours and the 10-Hour Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta. The GT Le Mans class has been especially exciting as the Corvettes, Porsche 911s, Ferrari 488s and BMW M6s are gunning to stop the Ford GT's three-race win streak.
The Lime Rock Northeast Grand Prix is the only time this championship gets to the East Coast, so don't miss out!

Author Ted Spickler on Genius, July 21, Scoville Memorial Library

SALISBURY Author Ted Spickler discusses his book "Gaining Insight Through Tacit Knowledge". He examines the recent film "The Man Who Knew Infinity" which presents vignettes from the life of Srinivasa Ramanujan, an Indian cleric who exhibited mathematical insights beyond explanation. In other words he was what we call a genuis. Ramanujan's brain offers an extreme example of problem solving in the subconscious mind.

Spickler, a long time summer resident in Salisbury holds a doctorate in educational psychology. For many years he worked as a Science Education Coordinator for Bayer Material Science helping to guide the corporate outreach initiatives and school science educational efforts in coordination with Bayer and the National Science Foundation, leading to his interest in how people learn.

This presentation describes how to attain what we call the "Aha" experience. The recognition of a subconscious level of mental activity is a hot topic. Spickler finds the parallels between Michael Polanyi's ideas on tacit knowledge and recent breakthroughs in psychology and neuroscience. Discovering how to apply tacit knowledge in learning and teaching is a rewarding experience for everyone.

Spickler will be speaking at the Scoville Memorial Library on Thursday July 21, at 2:00 p.m.

The Latest on Alzheimer's and Dementia
On Saturday, August 6 at 11 am, renowned physician and researcher Ian A. Cook, M.D. of UCLA will present, "An Update on Alzheimer's and Other Types of Dementia."  Dr. Cook will discuss the latest research and treatments for Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia.

The human brain has been described as the most complex object in the known Universe. Despite explosive growth in scientific understanding over the past century, countless questions remain, many of which Dr. Cook has been passionately exploring.  A graduate of Princeton University and Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Cook is a Professor-in-Residence in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and in the Department of Bioengineering at the School of Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA.  He is also an Attending Physician at Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital and a Research Scientist at the UCLA Brain Research Institute where he invented a patented treatment for depression and PTSD which is now being studied for use with other disorders.

Dr. Cook is an award winning professor of UCLA medical students and Internal Medicine residents; he holds leadership positions in national medical organizations, including the American Psychiatric Association, where he is a Distinguished Fellow.  He was appointed a standing member of the National Institute for Health's  Interventions Committee for Adult Disorders and is a life member of the National Eagle Scout Association.
