Iron Industry Bus Tour May 21st at the SHS

Sharon, CT: The Sharon Historical Society and Museum is pleased to announce an upcoming bus tour of Iron Industry sites led by Ed Kirby. The tour will take place on May 21st, leaving from the Sharon Historical Society (18 Main St, Sharon) at 9 am and lasting approximately 3 hours.

Along with stops to explore Iron Industry sites such as Beckley Furnace and the Lime Rock Furnace #2, historic and geologic points of interest will be pointed out along the drive including the Sharon Green, Caulkinstown and White Hollow Road areas.

Gone Fishing: Northwest Connecticut Fisheries and Waterways
Sponsored by the Salisbury Association Land Trust and the Scoville Memorial Library. Mike Beauchene, fisheries biologist at the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), will discuss Connecticut's fisheries, focusing on local streams, rivers and lakes. He will talk about the management of recreational fishing and what it means for CT's environment and economy. Tracy Brown, from Trout Unlimited, will present an update on restoration efforts on Salisbury's Salmon Kill. Identified as one of the priority waterways by Trout Unlimited, Salmon Kill is part of their efforts to preserve and restore critical brook trout habitat and populations in the northeast, actions that will benefit fish and fisherman alike. This program is for anyone who wants to know more about our native fish and their habitats.

The Power of Song in the Golden Age in England: The Elizabethan Era
An exploration of the music of the famous English composers.
Christine Gevert will give an overview of the fascinating times during Elizabeth I's reign, in which for the first time a secular ruler was the spiritual leader of a nation. Using visual and audio examples, she will explore the genre of the English madrigal and motet through the vocal music of Elizabethan composers such as William Byrd, Thomas Tallis, Thomas Morley, John Wilbye and others. Utilizing quotes from Shakespeare's "Hamlet", the talk will also showcase three motets written by a young contemporary composer commissioned by Crescendo. This presentation focuses on program to be performed by Crescendo Chorus and Viola da Gamba Ensemble titled "Elizabethan Music from the "Golden Age" in England and The Sounds of Hamlet." Christine Gevert is the founding Artistic Director of Crescendo and has performed in numerous early music festivals in the northeast, Europe and South America.

The White Hart Speaker Series presents "The Capitalist" by author Peter Steiner, in collaboration with Oblong Books & Music and the Scoville Memorial Library.
St. John Larrimer is a Wall Street investment banker, " the Capitalist", in the fifth novel of Steiner's Louis Morgon series. Thanks to the Larrimer Fund's spectacular returns, everyone wants a piece of the action. The only problem is that the whole operation is phony. And with the collapse of the markets and the demise of some of the biggest investment banks, Larrimer's scam is revealed, and he has to skedaddle to his luxurious Caribbean retreat. Peter Steiner is the author of "Le Crime", "The Terrorist", "L'Assassin", and "The Resistance", and is perhaps best known for his iconic cartoon "On the internet nobody knows you're a dog," the most reproduced cartoon "The New Yorker" has ever published. He lives in Connecticut and spends a good part of each year in rural France, where his books take place.

Adam Haslett is the author of the short story collection You Are Not a Stranger Here, His books have been translated into eighteen languages, and he has received the Berlin Prize from the American Academy in Berlin, the PEN/Malamud Award, and fellowships from the Guggenheim and Rockefeller Foundations. He lives in New York City.

SPRING FOR SOUND 2016- SIX YEARS RUNNING-MILLERTON'S HIGHLY REGARDED 'DIY' INDIE MUSIC FESTIVAL THAT INCITES "DANCING IN THE STREETS" CONTINUES TO FILL THE VILLAGE WITH LIVE MUSIC FOR AN ENTIRE DAY TO BENEFIT THE NECC


Millerton, New York, April 12, 2016 ---This summer marks the sixth year for what has become one of the most highly attended and anticipated events in the Hudson Valley's music festival circuit. SPRING FOR SOUND 2016 takes over the Village of Millerton in Dutchess County on Saturday, June 11th from 10am to midnight.

SPRING FOR SOUND is an all-day, rain-or-shine event that takes place in the middle of the beautiful walking village of Millerton, NY. Proceeds from tickets sales will be donated to support the vital programming of the North East Community Center in Millerton, now celebrating 26 years of service. Spring for Sound is co-produced by local residents Mimi Ramos and Kristen Panzer, in partnership with the North East Community Center.

Happenings at Noble Horizons
Free Diabetes Workshop
May 2-June 13

On Monday mornings from May 2-June 13, Noble Horizons will host a free comprehensive diabetes series entitled, "Protect Your Health: Self-Care and Management of Diabetes". The course is taught by certified diabetes instructor, Anne Hummel, MS, RN, and will begin with a walk from 9:30-10:00am, followed by class in the Learning Center from 10:00-noon.

The course is appropriate for people who have type 1 or type 2 diabetes, as well as their care givers, support persons, health care professionals and family members. Research has proven that good control of blood sugars impacts significantly on one's health and prevents the severe complications long associated with poorly controlled diabetes.

Participants will receive free materials and learn about the latest medications, tools, and techniques to help control diabetes, as well as how to work with physicians to determine the best treatment plan. The 9:30-10:00am pre-class walk is optional.

Make Your Money Work for You

On Thursday, May 5 at 5:30 pm, Salisbury Bank and Noble Horizons will host a free workshop entitled, "Make Your Money Work for You: How to Spend, Save, Borrow and Invest Wisely". The program will be presented by Stacey Curtis, Assistant Vice President of Salisbury Bank's Canaan branch, a graduate of Connecticut's School of Finance and Management and a contributor to the Bank's Community Reinvestment Act program.
Ms. Curtis will discuss the impact of financial habits impact on financial independence and why what you do with what you earn is as consequential as what you earn. Specifically she will explain how to define financial goals and create a budget to attain those goals, how to assess financial products and services, how to monitor and improve one's credit rating, and how free on line resources can help inform savvy saving and investing. Help Fight Addiction in Our Communities

On May 9 and 16, from 5-8 pm, Noble Horizons and the Salisbury Volunteer Ambulance Service are hosting a free two-session training program to help people recognize, provide support and give assistance to those struggling with addictions. A free light supper will be served at 4:30 pm. This Community Awareness Program is offered by the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addictions Services and is open to parents, teachers, coaches, community and faith-based leaders, mental health volunteers and all who are concerned about the rising rates of addiction in our communities.

Addiction is a complex disease that impacts the functioning of the brain and body. It affects people of all ages and can take many forms, including the abuse of drugs and other substances, alcohol, gambling, technology, food and more. It also causes serious damage to families, relationships, schools, workplaces and neighborhoods. Addiction can be effectively prevented, treated and managed by healthcare professionals in combination with family or peer support.

Attendance at both sessions is required to earn 6.0 CEUs from the CT Certification Board, but those able to attend only one session are encouraged to do so. Program materials will be provided and registration is requested by May 2 at  www.noblehorizons.org or 860-435-9851

The 14th Colony Artists Exhibit at Noble Horizons

On Friday, May 13, from 5:00-7:00 PM, Noble Horizons invites the community to an opening reception for an exhibit of small works by the 14th Colony Artists. Founded in 2009, the 14th Colony Artists is a collective of more than 125 local artists from New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts. Its members include painters, photographers, sculptors, clay artists, installation artists, videographers and filmmakers. The exhibit will be in the Learning Center Gallery which is open on weekends, 11:00 am-4:00 pm, through June 21.

The Pooch Party and Pageant Returns May 14

Calling all lovers...of dogs and fun! On Saturday, May 14 from 2:00-3:30 pm, The Little Guild, Sand Road Animal Hospital and Noble Horizons will host the popular Pooch Party, a fun-filled afternoon of games, hilarious competitions, a pooch pageant and parade, and a host of other entertaining activities for dogs and people.

Dogs of all sizes, shapes and ages (and their owners) are encouraged to dress up for the pageant and parade ...and paparazzi! Guests may meet dog and pet therapy trainers, cuddle with dogs available for adoption, enjoy live music, and much more. Children are encouraged to attend, accompanied by a parent, as are those who don't own a dog, but who wish to enjoy festivities! Life-size 'dogs' will be greeting children, and raffles with gift certificates, pet items, and other irresistible treasures will be featured. Microchipping will also be available.

Dogs must be leashed on a 6'-8' non-flexible leash at all times and be up-to-date on their vaccinations Admission to the pooch party is free although registration is requested at, www.noblehorizons.org  or 60-435-9851 ext. 190. Noble Horizons is located at 17 Cobble Road in Salisbury, CT.

Want to donate your time to a good cause!

AHA! (after hours activities at North Canaan Elementary School) is looking for a few more participants for our upcoming fundraiser - Vive la Femme. Vive la Femme will be "an evening of pampered indulgence" for the wonderful women of the tri-state region and will be held on May 6 from 5:30 to 9:00 at the Canaan VFW.
We could use a few more pampering services for our guests, such as massages, Reiki, facial waxing, make-up, mini-manicures, hair care - anything that can be done in a 10 to 20 minute session and that would treat our guests to something extra special.

We currently have space for a few more vendors who cater to women. The space would include a 6 ft table and small area around it. The fee for a vendor is $25.
You could also help by donating gift certificates or items to our fantastic Penny Auction, or French theme food to our lavish refreshment table.

Lakeville, CT - April 14, 2016 - Salisbury Bank and Noble Horizons are partnering to offer a seminar that will provide information, tools and strategies to help you distinguish how to spend, save, and invest  your hard earned money.
 
The seminar will include information on how financial habits impact financial independence and why what you do with what you earn is as important as what you earn.  It will cover the importance of defining one's financial goals and how creating a budget can help attain those goals. Additional topics will include how to access and protect your credit score, and how to use budgeting services and apps to help manage your cash flow. Finally, this presentation will provide tips on how to save for the future, whether for a new home, an emergency, college or retirement.
 
Presenter Stacey Curtis started with Salisbury Bank in July 2008 as Executive Secretary. A 2014 graduate of the Connecticut School of Finance and Management, Stacey was promoted to AVP, Administration that same year. Lakeville, CT - April 6, 2016 - Salisbury Bank announces its 2016 Community Shred Day Schedule. This free service is part of the Bank's commitment to help in the fight against identity theft. The Shred Days will take place during the months of May through September at our branches throughout the tri-state and are open to all local residents and businesses.
Betsy Summerville, Executive Vice President and Chief Retail Officer stated, "With the increased importance of minimizing the risk of identity theft and fraud, our Shred Day events continue to help community members securely dispose of sensitive documents to aid in protecting themselves."
Each person may bring up to 4 boxes of paper (paper only; no binders) for shredding by Legal Shred personnel to any of the locations listed below from 9:00 a.m. to noon.
