In the past year, it has served more than 2,000 women, men and children and 350 of those have been sexual assault survivors.  I addition, 7,000 students in grades pre-K through 12 have received prevention education programs focusing on safe touch, bullying and conflict resolution and health relationships, to name just a few of the programs.  Club member Mona Staaf-Gunther (upper left), introduced her and is responsible for securing each week's luncheon speaker.

A Great Organization......

The Center for Humans and Nature recently invited me to write a commentary to the topic question, How can zoos and aquariums foster cultures of care and conservation?

I was delighted to do this and hope that you will both read my comment and get to know this organization - - - - and subscribe.  While you may not always agree with some of the published opinions and comments, they raise some of the most important conservation and nature related questions that need to be considered and discussed.

I hope you will visit the Center for Humans and Nature at add it to your list of organization from which you want to receive articles.

AHA Announcement

Want to donate your time to a good cause!

AHA! (after hours activities at North Canaan Elementary School) is looking for a few more participants for our upcoming fundraiser - Vive la Femme. Vive la Femme will be "an evening of pampered indulgence" for the wonderful women of the tri-state region and will be held on May 6 from 5:30 to 9:00 at the Canaan VFW.
We could use a few more pampering services for our guests, such as massages, Reiki, facial waxing, make-up, mini-manicures, hair care - anything that can be done in a 10 to 20 minute session and that would treat our guests to something extra special.

We currently have space for a few more vendors who cater to women. The space would include a 6 ft table and small area around it. The fee for a vendor is $25.
You could also help by donating gift certificates or items to our fantastic Penny Auction, or French theme food to our lavish refreshment table.
For more information, please call Lynn Nania at 860-824-0393 or email to LCNANIA@YAHOO.COM.

Spring for Sound to benefit the NECC

SPRING FOR SOUND 2016- SIX YEARS RUNNING-MILLERTON'S HIGHLY REGARDED 'DIY' INDIE MUSIC FESTIVAL THAT INCITES "DANCING IN THE STREETS" CONTINUES TO FILL THE VILLAGE WITH LIVE MUSIC FOR AN ENTIRE DAY TO BENEFIT THE NECC

Millerton, New York, April 12, 2016 ---This summer marks the sixth year for what has become one of the most highly attended and anticipated events in the Hudson Valley's music festival circuit. SPRING FOR SOUND 2016 takes over the Village of Millerton in Dutchess County on Saturday, June 11th from 10am to midnight.

SPRING FOR SOUND is an all-day, rain-or-shine event that takes place in the middle of the beautiful walking village of Millerton, NY. Proceeds from tickets sales will be donated to support the vital programming of the North East Community Center in Millerton, now celebrating 26 years of service. Spring for Sound is co-produced by local residents Mimi Ramos and Kristen Panzer, in partnership with the North East Community Center.

"Spring For Sound 2016 will be a year of expansion for the festival on all levels," says event co-founder Ramos. "We are amazed at the number of national and local bands that reached out to us in the last few months. That said, we will have a bigger roster and a bigger music loving audience coming to Millerton."

Festival goers are always treated to a family-friendly event with a unique variety of indie-band music for people of all ages. This year's festival is no exception and will feature; The Nice Ones who made their debut performance 5 years ago at Spring for Sound; the crowd pleasing hip hop artist Buddha Da Great; Take One Car (intelligent, experimental indie-rockers from Poughkeepsie) and Spring For Sound's founding band, The Kyles, who have brand new songs and a new guitarist.

Opening the festival on Saturday morning with a new twist is a special "Oldtone Roots" line-up featuring The Hayrollers, Bash Bish Blue Grass Band and The Lucky Five. This festive "hootenanny' will kick off at 10:00 am during the Millerton Farmers Market on the Village Green, which will be transformed into Spring for Sound's NXNE Venue, with music all day on relay stages at opposite ends of the green.

Team SFS 2016 is excited to welcome back CT's death-funk trio,Lespecial, (aggressive dance music to turn heads before the Apocalypse!) and last year's SFS addition, The Big Takeover, a reggae party band out of New Paltz featuring a killer horn section and the dynamic vocals of front woman NeeNee Rushie.

This year will feature new stages/venues along the Harlem Valley Rail Trail corridor and an actual street takeover with a block party vibe. Details on that are t.b.a.

Food trucks, kid fun, hula hoop party with DJ Doctor -- it's Millerton's homegrown music festival -- proceeds support the vital programming of the North East Community Center.

More bands continue to sign on. Visit Springforsound.com for details, tickets and band updates.

In the last 5 years, SPRING FOR SOUND has donated over $22,000 to the NECC and they are looking to increase that number substantially in 2016.

Advance tickets are $20 and are available at the North East Community Center 51 S. Center Street, Millerton; The Music Cellar, located at the head of the rail trail in Millerton; and online at www.springforsound.com. Tickets may also be purchased at the gates for $30. Children 12 and under accompanied by an adult are free.

Artists and venues are subject to change. Look for updates at www.springforsound.com and www.facebook.com/springforsound
