POETRY READING
by
Alexander Shundi
Presented in conjunction with the exhibition - The Art of Alexander Shundi

Saturday, March 5
5:00 - 6:00 p.m. / Doors open 4:30 p.m.
The Moviehouse Studio Gallery, 48 Main Street, Millerton, NY
__________________________________________________________________

MILLERTON, NY---On Saturday, March 5, from 5:00 - 6:00 p.m., The Moviehouse Studio Gallery offers visitors a rare opportunity to hear the poems of Alexander Shundi, read by the artist himself, while viewing their accompanying works of art in the exhibition - The Art of Alexander Shundi.

The exhibition features a number of collages accompanied by poems, written by Shundi in English or Italian with the accompanied translations. The collages/poems are conceived to explore a synergy between expression in spoken-written language, and reactions to visual images. It is all an illusion, primarily. But what follows is of interest: one may serve as a key to decipher the other, and vice versa.

The pieces are conceived primarily as illustration in its purity of meaning: to shed light on a thought concept. Both the discipline of vision and of the written poem, have much in common in the formal means of expression, as in their requirement for balance, mystery, rhythm, atmosphere, and harmony.

As a master of his craft, Shundi's works display a complex and imaginative mind that is rarely at rest. His work is intricate, and rich in symbolism. Brimming with references to religion, sacred geometry, spirituality and mythology, the work incorporates organic forms, often set within an architectural framework, and often plays with perspective in a unique way - think Bosch, meets Dali with overtones of José Clemente Orozco and De Chirico, while paying homage to African, Amerindian, and early Italian Renaissance art, all within a particularly subjective interpretation of space and time very much within context of modernism.

The readings will take place at 48 Main Street, Millerton, NY. The event is free and open to the public. Doors will open at 4:30 p.m.

ARTIST BIO

Born Alexander Bocchialini Shundi in Correggio, Italy, Shundi lived in Parma until his family moved to the U.S. in 1957. He obtained a BFA and MFA from Yale University, and went on to study at many prestigious institutions including Brera Academy in Milan and the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. His talent and unique approach have led to distinguished teaching positions at Silvermine College of Art in New Canaan, CT, and State University of New York (SUNY Purchase). Shundi also founded and ran the Santa Fe International Academy of Art in New Mexico where he taught painting, figure, landscape, drawing and art history, and has served as Dean of the Silvermine-La Coste school of Art in La Coste, Provence, France, and the Artsworks Forum School, in Millerton, NY. He is currently professor of Art History and Drawing at the New York Institute of Technology in Manhattan, and conducts intensive advanced painting classes in his studio-residence, a converted 1852 church in Amenia, New York. Alex also teaches advanced painting for the Arts on the Lake, Lake Carmel, NY, in addition to a full lecturing schedule, and has exhibited both nationally and internationally throughout his career.

Arnoff Moving & Storage Partners with Move For Hunger

Arnoff Moving & Storage has committed to fighting hunger in our community, partnering with the national hunger relief organization Move For Hunger, joining in with a force of relocation companies throughout North America to collectively deliver more than 6 million pounds of food to local food banks throughout the USA. When people move, they often throw out a good deal of food that could be delivered to a family in need rather than just left behind. The crews of Arnoff Moving & Storage will now be collecting those food items from their customers and delivering them directly to two local food banks: The Food Pantries for the Capital District and Dutchess Outreach. The service is free to customers and turns every move into an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of the less fortunate, simply by donating cans and non-perishable goods on moving day.

"We are thrilled to have Arnoff Moving & Storage join us in the fight against hunger," says Adam Lowy, Founder and Executive Director of Move For Hunger. "With such devastating hunger statistics at both the local and national level, their efforts will provide crucial support to the food bank's mission to feed the hungry."

"When we realized how many of our neighbors were going hungry, we knew we had to do something," explains David Feldman, Vice President of Sales at Arnoff Moving and Storage. "Move For Hunger gives us the opportunity to help our community in a meaningful way."

Move For Hunger is a non-profit organization that mobilizes the relocation industry to fight hunger and reduce food waste by collecting unwanted, unopened food from people who are relocating and deliver it to local food banks.  For more information or to find out how you can help support Move For Hunger, visit www.MoveForHunger.org.

Since 1924, Arnoff Moving & Storage has been a family-owned and operated full-service moving and storage company serving New York's Hudson Valley, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Florida - as well as many other states across the country. With the fifth generation now involved with the company, Arnoff is truly the family to trust for all your relocation needs. We are proud to say, "Let Our Family Move Your Family." Mark Scarbrough: Things That Go Bump In The Book: The Ghost Stories of Henry James and Edith Wharton
While dozens of writers in the nineteenth century and early twentieth century made careers out of writing about spooky goings-on, few took the craft to such heights--or perhaps depths-as friends and fellow writers James and Wharton.  Scarbrough leads attendees through readings and discussions of these scary short stories from the long course of their careers, stories that explore the supernatural, the unexplained, and the just plain bizarre. From an age that birthed Edwardian guilt, Freudian analysis, and a host of novel religious off-shoots from Christianity, things are bound to be not what they seem. Or perhaps exactly what they seem.

Ars Perfecta - The Perfect Art of Renaissance Polyphony and the life of Giovanni P. da Palestrina presented by Christine Gevert. Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina was of one of the greatest composers of all times.  Crescendo's founding Artistic Director Christine Gevert explores the development and significance of vocal polyphony in music through an exploration of Palestrina's life and work.  Polyphony had a major impact upon western classical music and there are parallels with other contemporary art forms, such as painting, architecture, garden design and the philosophy.  This talk gives the background to Crescendo's upcoming concerts which feature sacred vocal works by Palestrina and his contemporaries and students Orlando di Lasso, Giovanni Maria Nanino, Ruggiero Giovanelli and Gregorio Allegri.

Gevert has taught and performed music in Europe, South America and the United States. Steeped in early music she has performed at early music festivals including  Washington, Amherst, Boston,  Narol, Poland, at the Metropolitan Museum  and elsewhere.   She is currently music director at Trinity Episcopal Church, Lime Rock CT,  founder and artistic director of Crescendo and her own baroque ensemble Les Inégales.

Chickens Are Smarter Than You Think! Scoville Sustainable Backyard Series

Recent scientific studies and reviews confirm that chickens possess abilities far beyond those of  a mere "bird brain". These include various modes of  communication including language,  decision making, complex social structures, self control, emotions. and other cognitive abilities. Chickens are far higher in the pecking order than previously understood, in some cases on par with primates. Folks who observe their backyard chickens confirm that chickens are far more complex than most people realize. Join bantam keeper Leslie Watkins for an entertaining introduction into the fascinating world of chickens and learn what you need to do to begin keeping your own flock of chickens. Live chickens will be present to answer questions.

Watkins has been keeping an amusing flock of bantams for about ten years. Through careful observation and mutual admiration she has become a master chicken whisperer, and a respected member of the flock. She is also a painter (lesliewatkins.com) and a principal of Dandelion Gardening Artsdandelionsgardeningarts.com, a garden design and maintenance company.

Era of Elegance: The Wallpaper Remains: The Rise, Fall and Preservation of Elegance in the Phelps-Hatheway House, Suffield,  presented by Lynn Mervosh, Connecticut Landmarks. The later years of the 18th century ushered in a period of elegance in Connecticut that seemed to openly contradict the ravages left by the War of Independence.  The Phelps Hatheway House in Suffield, CT offers evidence of this significant rise in both prominence and consciousness of the individual that would long endure. A close examination of the family history, architecture and decoration of this property tells a magnificent but nonetheless tragic tale of two families set during the time of our country's great emergence.

Dr. Mervosh is the first guide and site administrator for this exquisite property.  She holds a PhD in19th century European literature from the University of Pennsylvania and has worked at the Sterling Memorial and Beinecke Libraries at Yale and at the Wadsworth Atheneum.  In her free time, she loves to bake and garden, both at the Hatheway House and at her much smaller home down the street.
