A SUCCESSFUL OPEN HOUSE!

From Catherine Washburn, Director of Admission & Financial Aid:

I am delighted to report that last Sunday Rocky Hill School had a very successful Fall Admission Open House. We had an outstanding showing of 48 families totaling 54 students, our highest since 2007.

"Families enjoyed touring our beautiful waterfront campus with our impressive Nathan Hale Society tour guides. Every family had the opportunity to observe and/or participate in some fabulous interactive programs such as a live Harkness discussion led by Belinda Snyman and her students, Hunter Corbett '17, Megan Caruso '17, Anessa Petteruti '17, DD Irvine '17, Hunter Gallant '17, Malcolm Meyerson '16, and Noah Jorgensen '16; a touch tank with eels down at the water's edge; delicious cider and donuts with Chef Rob in the Garden; a hayride and pumpkins; make-a-print in the art room with Meg Getsinger; Deckhands Theater Company rehearsing with Trinity Rep instructors; and robotics with Tom Adams, Zach Jennings, and Sara Gasrow."

Keep spreading the word and sending families to visit Rocky Hill School. Our next Open House is on January 25, 2015 from 1:00-3:00 p.m.

They also experienced the keynote addresses by the renowned Peggy McIntosh and Anita Hill.

Certamen
On Saturday, October 25, Rocky Hill School hosted its first ever Certamen, a quiz competition for Latin students. Brady Dill '15 and Shane Woolley '15 were the organizers and facilitators of the event. They did a fantastic job coordinating and hosting the participants from East Greenwich High School.

The final round was a tight one with the team of Griffin Rademacher '16, Megan Caruso '17, and Clarice Jennings '18 taking home first place.

SUPPORT ROCKY HILL SCHOOL

Brickwalk Campaign

Looking for a unique gift this holiday season? Purchasing an inscribed brick in one of our three campus brickwalks is a timeless way to honor a member of the Rocky Hill School community, past or present. By purchasing a brick, you get the opportunity to leave a wonderful, lasting mark on campus.

This year you can choose from two brick options:

  • I "heart" RHS bricks commemorate the School's 80th Birthday, support Alumni fundraising efforts, and help build a new endowed fund for financial aid. The bricks are $200 and are only available during the 2014-15 school year.
  • RHS Bricks are $100 each or five for $400 and support the Alumni Association, which uses buy-a-brick campaigns as a fundraising initiative.
Want to surprise your special guest on GrandFriends' Day? Purchase an inscribed brick in one of three campus brickwalks. This is a timeless way to honor a member of the Rocky Hill School community, past or present. Bricks are $100 each or five for $400 and are installed twice yearly in the fall and spring.

CONGRATS TO THE MATH TEAM!

The Rocky Hill School Math Team had a great meet last Wednesday, edging East Greenwich by a score of 62 to 61. They also defeated the host school, West Warwick, along with Ponagansett and Exeter/West Greenwich. The high scorers were Robin Wang and Ziqiao Wang, who each had 14 points out of a possible 18. This meet was notable because of the number of new members on the team, including several freshmen. The math team's next meet will be in early December. Email Terry Coes for information about the team.

OUT IN THE COMMUNITY

The eighth grade visited our friends at Atria Harbor Hill, a residential community in East Greenwich. During their visit, the residents helped the students paint plant signs for the Middle School section of the Garden Classroom.  Students will visit with residents throughout the school year.

Mia Hanssen '19 visited with one of our friends at Harbor Hillwho amazed her and the rest of the students with her age, a young 104 years old.

Peter Chen '19 and Davidson Cheng '19 spent time with a resident while doing a fun painting project together.

Lower School

HEALTHY HAUNTED HOUSE AND HALLOWEEN PARADE - Tomorrow!

Friday, October 31   |   Starting at 8:30 a.m.   |   Sharpe Gymnasium

The lights in the gym are turned off and replaced with an array of orange and purple holiday lights! There really is nothing scary about it, but some students new to Rocky Hill may be comforted to hear from their parents that the Healthy Haunted House is fun, not spooky!

In the afternoon, students are invited to change into their costumes for a Lower School parade around campus. We ask that weapons or gory/overly scary costumes not be brought to school as they have the potential to scare our younger students. After the parade, the children get to watch their teachers perform in costume!

ACE

Whitney Barker and Holly Cotta attended a presentation at Brown University called Thinking Differently, which strives to create a world in which every learner is recognized. Eye to Eye, an advocacy and mentoring program for students with learning differences, was founded by David Flink, a 2002 Brown alumnus. He spoke to his personal experiences as a student with learning differences, who, through a series of events and moments of self-discovery, realized that he was not alone in his journey. Signed copies of his book are available in ACE.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Brooke Mongeon - Girls' Varsity Field Hockey

"The Girls Varsity Field Hockey team is proud to nominate our sophomore goalie, Brooke Mongeon, for Athlete of the Week. Brooke has improved her save percentage over the course of the season and has clenched the division for most regular season saves totaling 280! Last week, Brooke saved a penalty stroke, her fourth this season. Way to go, Brookie!"
- Coach Fairchild

Griffin Rademacher - Varsity Cross Country

"The Varsity Cross Country team nominates Griffin Rademacher '16 for Athlete of the Week. Despite a nagging shin injury, Griffin has improved steadily throughout the season. He took nearly a minute off of his 5k time in last week's race at St. Andrews, finishing in 22:55. Nice job, Griffin, and keep up the good work for this week's SENE championship meet!"

- Coach Van Deusen

Faculty News

Gail Berson will join Rocky Hill School as interim Director of College Counseling during Mrs. Cerenzia's maternity leave this winter. An opportunity to "meet and greet" Ms. Berson will be scheduled in the near future so that parents of students in the classes of 2015 and 2016 can get to know the newest member of the School community. Ms. Berson plans to shadow Mrs. Cerenzia in December to ensure a smooth transition. In due time, Ms. Berson will become a familiar face in the Upper School. Welcome, Gail!

Maureen Fahey was elected President of the Board of Directors for the Rhode Island Bridge Association this past weekend. The purpose of the Association is to promote the game of bridge within the state of Rhode Island. It is an especially exciting time as the Nationals are in Providence this winter and over 10,000 bridge players are expected to participate. Congrats, Maureen!
