DIVERSITY FORUM: EQUITY AROUND THE HARKNESS TABLE

Wednesday, October 29   |   7:00-9:45 p.m.   |   Flynn Lecture Hall

The "Big 8" identifiers articulated by NAIS (Ability, Age, Ethnicity, Gender, Race, Religion, Sexual Orientation, Socioeconomic Status) may present students and faculty with a number of challenges within their academic ideologies. This forum will discuss how voices are valued and assessed around the Harkness Table, and it will raise questions about how sensitivities stemming from identifications with the Big 8 may, at times, contribute to a reticence to contribute in discussions. Current students, alums, parents, and teachers are invited to this forum to discuss their own experiences.

DIVERSITY GUEST SPEAKER: ALEX MYERS

Thursday, October 30   |   1:30-2:45 p.m.   |   Flynn Lecture Hall

Alex Myers will be addressing the Upper School students and faculty on issues of transgender identity in schools. Mr. Myers was the first openly transgender student at both Phillips Exeter Academy and Harvard University, and he also spent time on the faculty at St. George's School.  Recently, Mr. Myers published a book entitled, "Revolutionary," which tells the story of his ancestor who, as a woman, fought in the Revolutionary War disguised as a man.  While this event is only open to students and faculty, Matt Gnolfo, Director of Diversity, feels that it is important to provide information aimed at helping foster the goals of the students, faculty, parents, and alums of Rocky Hill School around the many societal issues encompassed by the theme for 2014-2015, entitled "Layers."

FROM THE NURSE

The blood drive during Saturday's Homecoming was a success for the Rhode Island Blood Center! The Rocky Hill School community stepped up and donated 9 units of blood. Each unit can help to save up to three lives so as many as 27 people will benefit! A huge thanks goes out to all who participated!

The flu clinic held on Monday was also a great success. Our School community is stronger and healthier when most everyone is vaccinated from influenza. If you weren't able to get your shot on Monday, check the Rhode Island Department of Health's website for a community flu clinic in your area.

LIBRARIAN TO PRESENT AT TECHNOLOGY CONFERENCE

Darshell Silva, Rocky Hill School's Librarian and Technology Integrator, will be presenting at the Rhode Island Department of Education's upcoming conference, "Innovation Powered by Technology 2014" on October 25 at Lincoln School.

HEALTHY HAUNTED HOUSE AND HALLOWEEN PARADE

Friday, October 31   |   Starting at 8:30 a.m.   |   Sharpe Gymnasium

The lights in the gym are turned off and replaced with an array of orange and purple holiday lights! There really is nothing scary about it, but some students new to Rocky Hill may be comforted to hear from their parents that the Healthy Haunted House is fun, not spooky!

In the afternoon, students are invited to change into their costumes for a Lower School parade around campus. We ask that weapons or gory/overly scary costumes not be brought to school as they have the potential to scare our younger students. After the parade, the children get to watch their teachers perform in costume!

LOWER SCHOOL KITE DAY!
