Harborhill Visit
Our friends from Atria Harborhill Senior Living visited campus and met with eighth grade students for a technology demonstration on Wednesday.  The students showed their guests the SMARTboard, where they plotted locations on a world map of the furthest locations visited by those in the group.  The seniors shared what was considered "new technology" when they were teenagers, and students heard about rotary telephones, early radio programs like Amos and Andy, and black and white televisions.  Using YouTube,  students pulled up some early TV programming and watched a Jack Benny monologue from his  comedy show.  The students then shared Google Earth and were able to quickly look up the home that one of the seniors grew up in, on North Grant Street in Casper, Wyoming.  Using the street view, she was able to see her house, which she had not seen since she was six years old!  The visit ended with the students using their iPads to create a multimedia document with their guests.

Senses

The kindergarten health class is learning about their bodies.  Last week students studied the five senses and learned how they keep them safe.  Students learned ways to protect and take care of their senses.  The highlights of the lessons were the experiments:

  • Touch - they reached into a box and tried to distinguish 10 different common items: pine cone, badminton birdie, marble, golf ball, feather, eraser, Styrofoam block, elastic, popsicle stick, and sand paper.
  • Smell - they guessed what they were smelling in covered cups: cinnamon, vinegar, lemon juice and onions.
  • Taste - they sampled unsweetened chocolate and sweetened chocolate and reported their likes and dislikes.
