Upper School
Spring Break Trips
Matt Gnolfo and five Latin students studied abroad in Greece and Italy through the American Council of International Studies.  They visited Athens, Dephi, Sorrento, Pompeii, and Rome, and even had the great fortune of being in St. Peter's Square for the Angelus.   
 
Lorena Henderson and a group of US students traveled to Barcelona, Madrid and Zaragoza. In Barcelona they visited the building of the famous architect Gaudí, learned how to dance flamenco and learned about the history of the city. In Zaragoza they visited the cathedral of "El Pilar," and in Madrid they saw the royal palace and  "El Prado"' museum, among many others things.

SISAL Art Show
The following ninth grade students have been entered into the Small Independent Schools Art League show at Windsor School in Boston from April 15- 27: Molly McMahon, Dihao Feng, Daniel Samudio
 
Shakespeare Competition
For the third straight year, Nicholas Charbonneau '13 participated in the Rhode Island Shakespeare Recitation Competition held at the Columbus Theater in Providence. Competing against high school students from across the state, Nick skillfully recited "Sonnet 116" and a speech from Hamlet.

Outstanding Artists
Henry Helme '13 won a cash prize and best in show at the Gallerie Ellipsis in Newport for his Raku vase.  Brendan Lada '13 was the only student in Rhode Island to win GOLD at the National Scholastic Art awards with his piece "All Eyes on Destruction." 
 
Life Scout
Zachary Jennings '16 advanced to the rank of Life Scout this month in Troop 1 Kingston. He now has an Eagle Adviser with his troop and can start working on his Eagle Project. 

Middle School

Spring Break Trip
Meg Myette led a group of Middle School students on a tour of Ireland, Wales and England during Spring Break.  Highlights included visiting a working sheep farm, kissing the Blarney Stone, taking in a performance at the National Theatre of Ireland, touring Trinity College in Dublin, attending Sunday services at Westminster Abbey, attending the Changing of the Guard Ceremony at Buckingham Palace, finding Platform 9 3/4, walking the famous crosswalk at Abbey Road, and seeing Judi Dench perform in the West End of London.  If you are interested in their stories, or would like to see pictures, please stop by the music classroom!

2013 RI Spelling Bee Championship

Anessa Petteruti '17 lasted 13 rounds and took third place out of 28 participants at the 2013 RI Spelling Bee Championship on March 9. 

 

SISAL Art Show

Middle School students have been entered in the Small Independent Schools Art League (SISAL) show next week.  It is a small independent schools art competition for the northeast, for grades 6-8. The show will be open to the public at the Carroll School in Lincoln, MA, April 1 - 5 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Students included are:  (Eighth Grade Drawing & Mixed Media) Dakota Seed, Megan Caruso, Danil Randall, Madeleine Hirsch, Anessa Petteruti, Matthew Thompson, Alejandro Perez, Cassidy Santos (Seventh Grade Sculpture) Aja Mulvaney, Olivia DePasquale, Charlotte Roch, Katlyn Conforti

George Cochran '22 visited the Maryland State House to research his third grade state project. Many thanks to Alumni Association President and host Sally Kenyon Grant '87 who arranged the tour and special visit to Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley's office and the United States Naval Academy over spring break.
 
Tar Wars
Evan Rodriguez '20 is representing Rocky Hill School in the statewide Tar Wars poster competition May 11 at the Community School in Cumberland. The winner will represent Rhode Island at the Tar Wars national competition in Washington, DC in July.  Alexis Weiler '20 and Analeah Harrison '20 were runners up.  Tar Wars Coordinator Dr. Lange served as the poster contest judge.

Marjan Behzadi Anvari '81 came to campus after more than 30 years on March 25. Visiting from Newbury Park, CA, Marjan brought her husband, Eric, daughter, Tarlan, and son, Teymoor.  Marjan fondly remembers her time at Rocky Hill as an international student from Iran.  Marjan lived on campus in both the ACE building and Pony Barn when they were faculty residences hosted by the Geiersbach and Bennett families. She was proud to show her children what was her bedroom on the second floor of ACE overlooking the Hale & Campbell quad. Marjan is a manager in community development in Thousand Oaks, CA.

Faculty Spotlight                                                      
US math teacher Terry Coes submitted several photos to the Professional Photographers of Rhode Island Image competition earlier this month and has a piece in the South County Annual Juried Photography Open, which runs until April 7.
   
US art teacher Ruth Clegg will have her work on display at the Dodge House Gallery from April 28-May 17.  She also received Honorable Mention at the South County Annual Juried Photography Open for her photo titled, "Just Below." 

MS/US art teacher Kara Dunne has a solo show in Jackson, Mississippi at Millsaps College at the Lewis Art Gallery, which runs March 7 - April 10.  During break, Kara went to Jackson to give an artist talk at the gallery as well as give student critiques.
