Show Your Colors
The Spanish and multicultural clubs sponsored a Show Your Colors event yesterday where members of the community dressed to reflect their cultural heritage.  Students provided food for a tasting during student life period.  Money raised will help pay for members of the clubs to attend AISNE's annual Students of Color conference in April.

A Prime Example of a Case Study
In early February, the largest currently known prime number was discovered, measuring more than 17 million digits. Inspired by Terry Coes' question, "How many blackboards would that fill up?" Julie Van Deusen's Algebra 2 and fourth and fifth grade math classes partnered to explore what it would take to write out this number, in terms of both time and space. Although it might not seem like an everyday problem, the logical thought process involved in answering questions like these is an ability students will utilize throughout their lives (especially if they ever do a case study interview!) Through data collection, best guess estimation, and numerous calculations, the class discovered that it would take a single person around 150 days (without any breaks) and a few thousand whiteboards to write out this largest-known prime number; however, if everyone at Rocky Hill worked on it together, we could complete it in around 8 hours (although we would need to bring in a lot of extra whiteboards.)  Does that sound like a good way for the RHS community to spend a school day? The students agreed: probably not.

Harbor Hill Visit
Eighth grade students visited Harbor Hill recently and enjoyed a spirited game of seated volleyball, followed by an activity to create memory boxes.  The class has developed a strong bond with many of the residents, one of whom attended last week's performance of Seussical.

World Cultures Week
The Middle School raised the flag of Israel to officially mark the beginning of this year's World Cultures Week.

US history teacher John Hughes, Mr. Eyal Almog and his son, Dylan Weisser '13, spoke in front of the Middle School students on Wednesday to help them garner a better understanding of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.  Mr. Almog is from Israel and served in the Israeli Air Force, and Dylan holds dual citizenship in the US and Israel.  We are grateful for their time and for helping students understand this complex topic.

Geography Bee
Anessa Petteruti '17 qualified with a written test to compete at the state level National Geographic Bee on April 5, 2013. Anessa won Rocky Hill School's geography bee in January.

Alyssa Grayson '19 earned a blue ribbon and placed third overall in the state for her age group with her presentation "Ernest Thompson Seton and Lobo" at the state 4-H competition last weekend at URI.
