Environmental Field TripThe AP Environmental Science class took a field trip to the Narragansett Bay Commission and the RI Resource Recovery group to learn more about the stages of waste treatment and recyclingefforts.
Show Your ColorsThe Spanish and multicultural clubs sponsored a Show Your Colors event yesterday where members of the community dressed to reflect their cultural heritage. Students provided food for a tasting during student life period. Money raised will help pay for members of the clubs to attend AISNE's annual Students of Color conference in April.
A Prime Example of a Case StudyIn early February, the largest currently known prime number was discovered, measuring more than 17 million digits. Inspired by
Terry Coes' question, "How many blackboards would that fill up?"
Julie Van Deusen's Algebra 2 and fourth and fifth grade math classes partnered to explore what it would take to write out this number, in terms of both time and space. Although it might not seem like an everyday problem, the logical thought process involved in answering questions like these is an ability students will utilize throughout their lives (especially if they ever do a case study interview!) Through data collection, best guess estimation, and numerous calculations, the class discovered that it would take a single person around 150 days (without any breaks) and a few thousand whiteboards to write out this largest-known prime number; however, if everyone at Rocky Hill worked on it together, we could complete it in around 8 hours (although we would need to bring in a lot of extra whiteboards.) Does that sound like a good way for the RHS community to spend a school day? The students agreed: probably not.
