The Lower School's Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser, which benefits the American Heart Association, was a huge success this year.
K-5 students worked hard to raise more than $1,700, a substantial accomplishment realized by the generosity of students, parents and friends. Many thanks to all who made this event great!

Third Grade Update
As part of their social studies curriculum, students researched and then dressed up as the explorer of their choice. Students wrote their own questions and scoured the campus for backdrops for interviews, which were recorded by students using a Flip camera. The explorers were: Ibn Battuta, Leif Ericson, Ferdinand Magellan, Sir Francis Drake, Sacagawea, George Mallory, Amelia Earhart, Charles Lindbergh, Sally Ride, Christa McAuliffe, Neil Armstrong, Robert Ballard and Alexander the Great.
Students recently completed the annual Mayflower Math project. Students used the dimensions and shape of The Mayflower to map out the real shape and size of this ship on the gym floor. They also cut out paper shapes to represent the passengers, crew and animals that traveled on The Mayflower in 1620. These were placed in the hold section of the ship so that the children could see how cramped the conditions were, and that's without considering the cargo and luggage!
Model Classroom
A Lower School model technology classroom is up and running in the second grade. A 50-inch, wifi-enabled television has been mounted on the wall and augmented with the wireless streaming capabilities of Apple TV. These tools allow second grade teacher Kelly Shamburg to project from her iPad and her laptop to the television. In a recent lesson, students used the laptop and television to collaborate with each other on the creation of a Prezi presentation. The collaborative presentation was part of a student project on the characteristics of community and town building. Project-based learning is one of the key elements of Rocky Hill's Strategic Plan, and second grade was chosen as one of two grades to pilot the program this year. Proceeds from the Catch the Wave gala will go toward equipping all of the Lower School classrooms with simliar technology.
