NAEP Test
The eighth grade class participated in the National Assessment of Educational Progress, also known as the "Nation's Report Card" on Tuesday. Four representatives from the US Department of Education were on campus to administer the computer-based test, which is used to compare student performance state to state and as a nation to see how education is progressing. It was an interesting challenge for the students, which many of them enjoyed.
Eighth Grade Expositions
The Middle School community has enjoyed another winter of eighth grade student expositions. This year's science theme allowed students to explore topics from the deepest parts of the ocean to the edges of the universe. Students presented on topics of the human brain, genetic cloning, green energy, and the natural world. Aside from becoming experts on their topics, students learn how to engage an audience of more than 80 people. Through research, careful preparation, and practice, students are able to deliver their expositions with confidence.
Alyssa Grayson '19 received two state medals at the Rhode Island 4-H banquet, one for conservation and one for public speaking. Last weekend she received a blue ribbon for the 4-H public speaking contest with her presentation, "Ernest Thompson Seton and Lobo." She will compete in the state finals on March 2. Alyssa was also recently featured in Kind News magazine for her work in wolf preservation. Click here to read more.

Civil War and Stock Market
Fifth graders have been hard at work completing their five-paragraph Civil War research papers. The papers are displayed on the Perkins bulletin board. They are also in their second week of playing the Journal Bulletin Stock Market Game. Ask them about the equity in their portfolios, they'll give you a run for your money!
Grade 5 vs Faculty Volleyball
Lower School teachers were victorious in the fifth annual volleyball match against the fifth grade students. In the first game, faculty had a substantial lead early on but the students did not give up and their effort paid off as they started a scoring run of their own. Unfortunately the difference was too big for students to overcome and the teachers won 21-7. In the second game, the students took an 18-10 lead. After a strategic time out, the teachers broke the students' momentum and went on to win the game 21-19. All grades were fully engaged with fourth graders acting as officials and the rest of the Lower school cheering enthusiastically from the stands.
Arctic Exhibit
The Culture Caravan from the Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology presented their Native People of the Arctic exhibit to Patty Pontarelli's first grade class. This presentation was part of the children's winter study of daily life in the Arctic, past and present. The exhibit included a vast assortment of Arctic artifacts that the children explored enthusiastically!
Year of the Snake
In honor of the Chinese New Year, kindergarten students are exploring the many kinds and physical characteristics of snakes. Students are learning the meanings of venom, coiling, and molting, as well as various snake habitats. Ask a kindergartener if a snake smells with its nose, how to identify a coral snake, or if snakes swim; you will be surprised to hear the answers!
A Stellar Performance
Since September, Julie Van Deusen has presented challenging weekly math problems to each Lower School class. "Put on Your Thinking Caps Problems," as they are called in the Singapore Math program, engage students in advanced problem solving strategies and push students to apply basic mathematical skills to complex, real-world problems.
