It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Richard S. Barker '54. Dick was a beloved member of the Rocky Hill community as an alum, father of Richard S. Barker Jr '83, grandfather of Eliza Barker '25 and father-in-law to ACE teacher Whitney Barker. Dick's long history with the School included several stints on the Board of Trustees, first from 1984 -1993 during which time he served as president (1988 -1993). Dick returned as the treasurer in 2000. Our condolences go out to the Barker family during this trying time; Dick will certainly be missed.
The School will close for Winter Break at noon TOMORROW.
Classes resume Tuesday, January 8.
Abby Costantino '18 will be performing in the "Songs of Christmas" choral show presented by the students of Phoebe Madden Voice School TONIGHT at 7 at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in East Greenwich.
Kaylie Walsh '14 has raised more than $3,000 for Wheels for Mustard Seed by distributing tubes of M&M's and asking her peers to return them filled with coins. Mustard Seed Communities (MSC) is a nonprofit organization whose special mission is to care for mentally and physically handicapped orphans, and some adults, in several third world countries. Last summer, Kaylie spent a week volunteering with MSC in Kingston, Jamaica. This year, in conjunction with United Cerebral Palsy, MSC is raising funds to get a proper wheelchair for each resident who needs one. Rocky Hill students have truly made a difference in the lives of these very special children.

The Hill
Rocky Hill's literary magazine, The Hill, launched its inaugural issue last Thursday. Editor-in-chief Michael Levy '14 worked tirelessly to produce a wonderful journal full of exemplary student writing and visual art. At the launch party in the Carriage House, faculty adviser Mike Cappelletti offered welcoming remarks, and numerous students read their creative work aloud. Special thanks also goes to parents Steve and Donna Levy, who arranged for and organized the printing. This celebration of student creativity is available for sale: $15 for one, $25 for two. Please contact faculty advisers Mike Cappelletti, Meg Getsinger or Nick Barker for further information.

Managing Money Grades 8 and 3 joined forces last week for math class. Students used "Conroy Dollars" to purchase gifts from a website. They had to justify the gifts, work out the total and calculate the tax. Leftover money was donated to a charity of choice. Students learned how to manage a budget and were encouraged to think of the needs of others as well.
Perkins Polar Express Second grade students, clad in their pajamas, embarked on a trip to the North Pole in the Perkins Polar Express. Students transformed the classroom into a magical train and conducted steam train research, learning the meaning of different cars, how they work without a motor, the purpose of a track, and the idea of resources coming from a city and being distributed by train to the smaller towns and countries. The class, with the help of Jaime Gardener, also learned how to make homemade hot cocoa, taking turns measuring and mixing. Kelly Shamburg, acting as train conductor, punched the students' golden tickets as she swung her lantern, blew her train whistle, and called all aboard the Polar Express through the halls of Perkins.

| | Mariner Classic Update In the championship game of last week's Mariner Classic, there was a hard fought battle between Rocky Hill and St. Andrew's. Trailing by only 5 at the half, the Mariners looked to make some adjustments and finish strong. The Mariners had another well-rounded game with three players in double figures: Troy Pierre-Louis '14 (15), Nick Simonson '14 (11) and Vaughn Gooding '12 (11). Ultimately, however, the team suffered a 74-48 loss.
