Though the weather suggests differently, it is still fall.  As an appropriate exercise for the season, preschool students learning about the letter "H" did some "harvesting" in the Garden Classroom Tuesday!

Eighth Grade Night in the US
TONIGHT  |  5:30 - 7:45 PM  |  Campbell Center
The night will begin with dinner in Campbell Center for eighth grade parents and students, followed by an introduction to the Upper School program.

Upper School math teacher Maureen Fahey worked with Theresa Conroy's eighth grade algebra class to explore the connection between sampling candy and sampling voters.

Sixth-graders had a great time dissecting perch on Tuesday in Blue Wheeler's science class.

Lower School
Tasty Fractions
Belinda Johnson's third-graders
and Theresa Conroy's eighth-graders worked with candy and fractions relating to cutting up a candy bar into equal pieces. They then estimated the number of M&M's in a mini-packet, worked out how close they were and then worked out the fractions of colors found in a packet of M&Ms. Of course the final task was to eat the candy!

Rock the Vote
Donna Goldstein's fifth grade class ran a presidential election in the Lower School. Children were escorted to the voting polls set up in the Blue Room.  Student names were checked off and the children voted at individual stations.  Each child received a sticker, thanks to Maria Emmons, that said, "I voted."  As a follow up math activity, grades 4 and 5 calculated statistical analysis based on the data.  Students used Excel to organize and enter data, and bar and circle graphs were created to represent models.

Faculty Spotlight
On November 2, US science teacher Abby Wood attended the biennial Ocean Literacy Summit sponsored by the New England Ocean Science Education Collaborative.  It was held at URI's Graduate School of Oceanography and was a terrific opportunity for approximately 200 researchers and educators to exchange their ideas.  The theme was Ocean Exploration, and the keynote speech was delivered by Dr. Robert Ballard, who is best known for his historic discoveries of hydrothermal vents, the R.M.S. Titanic, and the German battleship Bismarck.  Other break-out sessions focused on sustaining ocean resources, new technologies in oceanography, and mathematical modeling as a tool to predict oceanic processes.  The day wrapped up with a panel discussion on the multidisciplinary nature of ocean exploration, hosted by NPR's Ari Daniel Shapiro.
