That Large Orange Fruit

Kelly Shamburg's second grade class took part in a tradition called "pumpkin day," during which students devoted themselves to pumpkins. They studied circumference, graphing, estimation, counting by tens and grouping numbers in math. Students made predictions, scientific observations, and hypothesized about what a pumpkin's appearance told them with regard to the number of seeds inside it and its age.  Students wrote pumpkin poetry using all five senses and learned how to read a recipe, take measurements, and make pumpkin seed trail mix from the seeds they had dug out. Pumpkin day was a success, and one student commented, "The most boring part of my day today was recess."
