Weight Loss Hint--Be Aware Of Self-Deception 

Be aware of self-deception. It can sneak up on you from any angle. Examples of food deceptions: Breaded/fried chicken breast does not constitute an optimally healthy protein source, compared to simple grilled chicken breast. Potatoes do not constitute a viable vegetable source (they are a carbohydrate source).  

  

 

 

Nutrition Hint--Ice Cream Craving Fix       

 

Eat homemade fruit smoothies instead of ice cream.

It's tempting to eat some foods during the summer that really don't offer the best nutrition for you. Ice cream is a terrific example of a summer food like this. Learn to make substitutions so that you're eating foods that are just as refreshing but a lot healthier for you. Substituting fruit smoothie (made from milk, yogurt, ice and fresh fruit) for your ice cream is a great example of how to do this.  One of my favorite smoothie recipes is to blend half a frozen banana with a handful of fresh cherries and 1/2 cup plain yogurt. Delicious and no guilt like when I hit the local ice cream parlor.

But please avoid restaurant or commercial smoothies!

Commercial smoothies may just be fat traps in disguise.

Why?

Most commercial smoothies have an ice cream base and are filled with added sugar.

They also top the charts when it comes to calories, which could lead to excess fat gain - especially if you maintain your normal calorie intake.

And with the added sugar (from the ice cream and other additions) this could cause some pretty crazy spikes in your blood sugar.

This could intensify your cravings for junk food, may cause inflammation, and could lead to most of the sugar being stored as fat.

 

 

 

Metabolism Retraining Hint--Get Creative

Summer schedule got you too tied up to take time for yourself? Get creative. Too busy for fitness? Change your social and eating habits to promote healthy lifestyle changes. Instead of eating a heavy lunch, pack a lunch and go for a walk. You can sip on a protein drink or snack on fruit while enjoying a nice brisk walk to break up your stressful work day. You will feel refreshed and more invigorated for your afternoon tasks.         

   

Recipe of the Week--Strawberry Whip       

 

1 package T&H strawberry-banana gelatin supplement

1 cup (8 ounces) fat-free vanilla yogurt

1 cup boiling water

2/3 cups cold water

1 cup fresh strawberries divided

 

In a mixing bowl, dissolve gelatin in boiling water. Stir in cold water. Cover and refrigerate until partially set; about 30-45 minutes. Add yogurt. Beat on medium speed until light and foamy, about 2-3 minutes. Refrigerate for 15-minutes.

 

Divide 2/3 cups strawberries among six dessert dishes. Top each with about ½ cup gelatin mixture and remaining strawberries. Refrigerate until serving.

 

Serves: 6                                          Fat grams: less than 1

Phase: Fast, 1, 2, 3, 4                       Protein: 7.6

 

You may substitute strawberry gelatin in place of T&H supplement, although best results are achieved using supplements.
