Weight Loss Hint--Make Yourself A Party Tray 

 

The type of party tray we're is talking about is a big vegetable platter, maybe with some low-fat dip on the site -- the kind you put on the buffet for weight-conscious guests.

 

But this one is just for you and any interested family members. Keep it in the fridge at eye level, encouraging you to snack healthy and avoid the higher-calorie contents of your refrigerator.

 

Several studies have found that we tend to eat more when food is within easy reach. Secretaries who placed candy on their desks ate about 48% more than when the candy was 6 feet away, according to research by Brian Wansink, PhD, director of the Food and Brand Lab at Cornell University.

 

 

Nutrition Hint--Carb Free Spaghetti Does Exist! 

 

 

We've all heard of spaghetti. The pieces of carb-rich heaven that serve as a vehicle for sauce and cheese... pasta is one of those easy, comforting dishes that pleases almost every palate.

 

But have you heard of veggetti? Spiralized, soup-ed, sometimes sautéed, and always mixed with amazing and healthy add-ins, zucchini noodles are a great alternative to pasta when you're looking for something lighter.

 

Though special spiralizers are the easiest way to get your veggetti on, you don't need fancy kitchen tools to create veggies noodles. Simply use a veggie or julienne peeler or finely slice the squash, and you're good to go.

 

Metabolism Retraining Hint--How Long Does It Take To Get Out Of Shape?   

There's no hard and fast rule about how long it takes to lose your fitness edge. Generally speaking, if you're very fit to begin with, your body will remain in a fitter state longer than someone who's not fit, even as your workouts cease.

That being said, a study in the Journal of Applied Physiology suggested that skipping workouts for just two weeks can significantly reduce your cardiovascular fitness, lean muscle mass, and insulin sensitivity.

 

Dr. James Ting, a board-certified sports medicine physician with the Hoag Orthopedic Institute in Irvine, California told CNN it can take two months or more to completely fall out of shape if you stop exercising.

Two months to lose all of your fitness gains is fast enough... but there are varying opinions on the matter. Many experts agree that about two weeks is a pretty standard number after which your body will start to fall out of shape with no exercise.

 

However, coach Pete Magill, six-time masters national cross-country champion, told Shape you can lose up to 50 percent of your fitness gains in a single week of inactivity.

   
 

 

   

Recipe of the Week--Zucchini Noodles with Cilantro Lime Chicken 

Recipe by Allison Crisp

 

3 large zucchini
1.5 lbs boneless & skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1" pieces
1/2 tsp cumin
1 tsp salt, divided
1/4 tsp ground black pepper
2 tsp any small hot pepper/jalapeño or to taste, seeded and minced (leave seeds in for very hot version)
1 medium or 1/2 large lime, juice of
3/4 cup cilantro, chopped
Cooking spray (I use Misto) 

 

Directions
1.Using a spiralizer or mandoline, make zucchini noodles, transfer into a large bowl and set aside. You can also chop zucchini into any size pieces, if you don't have the gadgets for making zucchini noodles.


2.Preheat large ceramic non-stick skillet on high heat and add chicken. Saute until golden brown, stirring occasionally. Add cumin, 1/2 tsp salt and ground black pepper towards the end, stir and cook for another minute. Transfer to a bowl and set aside. 

 

3.Wipe clean or wash and pat dry the skillet and return to the stove on high heat. Spray with cooking spray and add zucchini noodles. Saute for 1.5 minutes, stirring frequently. Remove from heat and add previously cooked chicken, remaining salt, small hot peppers/jalapeños, lime juice and cilantro. Stir gently and serve hot.


Storage Instructions: Refrigerate covered for up to 48 hours
