Skeptical about another diet.....but SUPER GLAD I took the chance!

 

I can't believe it, I was skeptical to get started and my husband stood by my side, pushed me to START NOW and WE DID IT!!!!   I am grateful that he did.  Brad has lost 63lbs. and I have lost 40lbs and 21.5 in just 60 days.We are both sleeping better thru the night, Brad doesn't snore anymore, I am off acid reflux medication and BEST OF ALL we have grown closer thru this process.

Weight Loss Hint--Drink Wisely 

Take along plenty of cold drinks for outdoor picnics. There's no need for sugary, sweet drinks.  Water, unsweetened iced tea, lemonade (you can even make it with artificial sweetener or reduce the sugar), 100% fruit juice, and low-calorie soft drinks are great refreshers. I love to take a variety of fruit juices, sparkling water, and wedges of lemon, lime, and orange to combine in creative and thirst-quenching ways.

Remember that not only do alcoholic beverages tend to have plenty of calories, they can go right to your head in the summer heat so be careful.
 

Nutrition Hint--Picnic Basket Makeover 

For many of us, packing a picnic basket and heading off to the beach, soccer field, or park is a wonderful rite of summer. But traditional picnic foods like fried chicken and potato salad can wreak havoc on your diet. The good news is that with a little tweaking, you can enjoy a picnic without compromising your waistline. Here are some healthy picnic food ideas sure to delight everyone. 

Light and Crunchy Appetizers

Pack your cooler with a variety of crisp, raw veggies like cucumbers, carrots, celery, asparagus tips, cherry tomatoes, and radishes are ideal for picnics. Take along a nutritious dip such as hummus, salsa, fat-free bean dip, or low-fat yogurt with herbs and spices. Stuffed celery with peanut butter, and baked tortilla chips and salsa, are favorites for both kids and adults.

For the folks who want to dip with a cracker or crisp, try one of the many whole-grain crisps options available such as oat crisps, whole-grain rice chips instead of high-fat chips.

A Different Main Dish

Instead of picking up a bucket of fried chicken or grilling burgers, why not pick up a roast chicken or try making wrap sandwiches?

Wraps are easy to eat and transport, and can be super-nutritious if you make them with lean meat, stuff them with veggies and a salsa or light dressing.

Making lean beef burgers or ground turkey breast burgers will shave fat and calories over regular ground beef. Skip the cheese and save even more.

Skinless chicken breasts, pork tenderloin, and veggie burgers are other delicious picnic food ideas. Try them brushed with barbeque sauce and topped with lettuce, tomato, and other veggies. Hot dog lovers, choose the lower-fat brands or try a chicken or turkey dog.

Brighten up a chicken or turkey entrée salad with green grapes, mangoes, peaches, or toasted slivered almonds.

Metabolism Retraining Hint--Play Time 

Let the kid inside of you come out! Picnics and BBQ's are a time to celebrate family and fun so join in on some backyard/park activities with the kids.  Set up the badminton net or play some volleyball.  Tossing the frisbee will always get the heart rate up.

Go "old school" with 3-legged races, potato sack races, water balloon tosses and egg race relays.  Not only will you get a great day of fun and exercise in, you will make lifelong memories with everyone in attendance and that is what makes a great picnic!
   

Recipe of the Week--Tangy TexMex Slaw 

 

Ingredients:
1/3 cup fat-free sour cream
2 tbsp. lime juice
1 tbsp. white wine vinegar
2 tsp. taco seasoning mix
1/4 tsp. salt
One 12-oz. bag (about 4 cups) broccoli cole slaw
1/2 cup frozen sweet corn kernels, thawed
1/2 cup canned black beans, drained and rinsed
1/2 cup finely chopped red bell pepper
1/3 cup finely chopped red onion
1/4 cup chopped cilantro

Directions:
In a large bowl, combine sour cream, lime juice, vinegar, taco seasoning, and salt. Whisk until uniform.

Add all remaining ingredients, and toss to coat. Eat up!
