A Healthy Conversation--Exercise To Cure Insomnia By Donna & John Krech 

Do you ever have problems falling asleep or even staying asleep at night? We all love our sleep; unfortunately, insomnia does not discriminate. John and I want to share some tips with you today that can help you cure that insomnia and sleep easy, in today's Healthy Conversation


Weight Loss Hint--Self-fulfilling Prophecy  

State the positive. You've heard of a self-fulfilling prophecy? Well, if you keep focusing on things you can't do, like resisting junk food or getting out the door for a daily walk, chances are you won't do them. Instead (whether you believe it or not) repeat positive thoughts to yourself. "I can lose weight." "I will get out for my walk today." "I know I can resist the pastry cart after dinner." Repeat these phrases like a mantra all day long. Before too long, they will become their own self-fulfilling prophecy.  
 

Nutrition Hint--Processing Hunger Versus Thirst

A body of research out of Pennsylvania State University finds that eating water-rich foods such as zucchini, tomatoes, and cucumbers during meals reduces your overall calorie consumption. Other water-rich foods include soups and salads. You won't get the same benefits by just drinking your water, though. Because the body processes hunger and thirst through different mechanisms, it simply doesn't register a sense of fullness with water (or soda, tea, coffee, or juice). 

 

Metabolism Retraining Hint--Active Dates     

Pass on the movie tickets and screen the views of a local park instead. Not only will you sit less, but you'll be saving calories because you won't chow down on that bucket of popcorn. Other active date ideas: Plan a tennis match, sign up for a guided nature or city walk (check your local newspaper), go cycling on a bike path, or join a volleyball league or bowling team.
 
 
   

Recipes of the Week--Salsa-fied Egg White Bites and Tuna Crunch Bites

This week we've got a couple of great and easy to make snacks that will put a new spin on a couple of old favorites.  

Egg White Bites   

 

 

Simply hard boil 3 eggs, slice in half, and remove the yolks.  Chill if needed. Place 1 tsp. salsa (see our recipe below or use store bought) in each half and enjoy.  

 

 

Here is our own recipe for Salsa from the Thin&Healthy Forever Cookbook:  

¼ cup onion, chopped

8 plum tomatoes, coarsely chopped

½ red onion, diced

2 jalapeno peppers, diced

1 clove garlic, chopped

¼ cup fresh coriander

½ teaspoon ground roasted cumin

¼ cup lime juice

Light salt and pepper, to taste

 

Combine ingredients in a non-aluminum bowl. Cover and let stand several hours at room temperature or overnight in refrigerator.

 

Serves:  16                                                        

Fat grams: less than 1

Phase:  Any                                                       

Protein:  less than 1

 

 

Tuna Crunch Bites 

 

Here's another super simple idea. Top 10 round cucumber slices with 3 ounces of water-packed tuna for a protein-packed, crunchy snack. 

Serving size: 1
Fat Grams: 2

Phase: Any

Protein: 25 grams
