Gratitude 10 By Donna Krech 

 


Here are some stats I want to share:  

 

40% of what we worry about is never going to take place

30% of what we worry about already took place

12% of what we worry about is related to our health issue that we are going to basically bring about or not bring about because we are worried about it or not worried about it

10% of what we worry about is somebody else thinks of us

8% of what we worry about is valid.

So, when you catch yourself worrying, stop and go to these percentages, because if it fits into the category of the 40%, the 30%, the 12% or the 10%, then let it go because you can't do anything about it.

Now what do we do about the 8%? With the 8%, you sit down and you do this. First, there are simply two things you need to do, and I am challenge you to do it every day for the rest of your lives. I call it the Gratitude 10. Now, it could be called a Gratitude list. The reason I call it a Gratitude 10 is because I will give 10 minutes, a minimum of 10 minutes each morning to writing out what I am grateful for. You don't get to think it. I was telling Marcia about it, and she said, well I kind of do it every morning, and I had her start writing it totally different, totally different, it is not the same thinking it as it is writing it down. You will start your day completely differently.

Weight Loss Hint--How To NOT Gain Over The Holidays 

You may already know that when you eat 3,500 calories more than your body needs you gain about one pound. Now let's take into consideration that the average American gains weight over the five weeks between Thanksgiving to New Year's Day (as much as 14 lbs in some cases). What if you only gain five pounds over the five weeks? Do you know that those five extra pounds equal an excess consumption of over 17,500 calories? What if you gain 10 lbs? That's 35,000 excess calories consumed!

Those cookies, candies and rich holiday foods really do add up. Do yourself a favor and make it your goal to at least maintain your current weight during the holiday season rather than getting heavier. 
 

   
 

Nutrition Hint--Don't Let Your Immune System Take A Hit 

During this sometimes stressful holiday season our immune systems can take a hit. One great immune system booster is yogurt and here is why:

Probiotics, or the "live active cultures" found in yogurt, are healthy bacteria that keep the gut and intestinal tract free of disease-causing germs. Although they're available in supplement form, a study from the University of Vienna in Austria found that a daily 7-ounce dose of yogurt was just as effective in boosting immunity as popping pills. In an 80-day Swedish study of 181 factory employees, those who drank a daily supplement of Lactobacillus reuteri-a specific probiotic that appears to stimulate white blood cells-took 33 percent fewer sick days than those given a placebo. Any plain yogurt with a Live and Active Cultures seal contains some beneficial bugs, but Stonyfield Farm is the only US brand that contains this specific strain. 

Your optimal dose: Two 6-ounce servings a day.

You can spice up that plain yogurt at least three ways:

  • Substitute plain yogurt as an ingredient in recipes or as a topping.
  • Use it as a base for dips and spreads.
  • Dress it up with tasty, lower-sugar ingredients for a snack.

You can start to incorporate plain yogurt into your day using one of these ways, or all three! See what works for you.

  • Topping Ideas. Top your nachos, chili, enchiladas, tacos, and casseroles with plain yogurt, or try a mixture of fat-free sour cream and plain yogurt (stir equal amounts of each together). You can still journal the total amount of mixture used as plain unsweetened yogurt since fat-free sour cream is nutritionally close to plain yogurt.
  • Creamier Smoothies. Add plain yogurt to your favorite smoothies. It adds creaminess! Simply substitute plain yogurt for any frozen yogurt or ice cream listed in the original smoothie recipe.
  • Substitute yogurt for sour cream or mayonnaise. Depending on the recipe, you can use plain yogurt instead of sour cream or mayonnaise.

My personal favorite is my own version of tzatziki sauce using plain fat free Greek yogurt. It makes a great veggie dip!

  • 2 (8 ounce) containers plain Greek yogurt
  • 2 cucumbers - peeled, seeded and diced
  • 1/2 lemon, juiced
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh dill

 

Metabolism Retraining Hint--Is Exercise During The Holidays At The Bottom Of Your List? Try These Workouts! 

It's hard enough to exercise when little is going on, but add holidays to the mix and many of us find exercise moving to the bottom of lengthy to-do lists. One thing you don't want is to add more stress by trying to maintain your regular exercise schedule. At the same time, staying active in some way will give you energy, help lessen holiday tension and, of course, help mitigate some of the extra calories you may be eating. 

If you need some workout ideas, these routines cover everything from cardio to circuit training to strength workouts with no equipment. Print them out and take them with you or just use them for inspiration in creating your own workouts.

The most important thing is to be realistic and go easy on yourself. You aren't always in charge of your schedule during the holidays so you can only do your best. Remind yourself that you can get back to your routine when you're back home. 

 

   

Recipe of the Week--Christmas Crepes 

 

  

Christmas Crepes

2 egg whites

½ cup skim milk

½ teaspoon vanilla extract

½ cup flour

Stevia (all natural sweetener to taste) 

 

Put egg whites and flour into a mixing bowl; blend with wire whisk. Add skim milk; stirring constantly. Add the sweetener and vanilla. Blend well. Spray a nonstick skillet with butter flavored nonstick cooking spray and heat until pan is hot, but not burning. Add 2 tablespoons of batter and swirl it around neatly to completely cover the bottom of the pan. Let cook over moderately high heat for 30-40 seconds or until lightly browned on bottom. Turn the crepe and cook on the second side for about 15 seconds longer. Turn the crepe out onto a sheet of wax paper.

 

Serves: 15 Fat grams: less than 1

Phase: 2, 3, 4 Protein: 1.2

 

Cherry Topping

3 cups Bing cherries

2 tablespoons brown sugar twin

1/4 cup simply fruit, cherry

1/2 cup diet 7-Up

 

Combine all ingredients in a small saucepan and cook over medium heat for about 10 minutes. If needed add 1 tablespoon cornstarch to thicken. You may spoon on top of crepes or use as filling and fold over. Top with 2 tablespoons of fat-free whipped topping if desired.

 

For variation: Try any of our sauce recipes, strawberry, raspberry or hot apple topping with cinnamon.

 

Serves: 15       Fat grams: less than 1

Phase: 3, 4     Protein: 1.6
