Weight Loss Hint--Halloween Hangover
Halloween unofficially marks the beginning of the holiday feasting season. For some folks the scariest part of Halloween is all the candy that is now at your fingertips.
Those cute mini fun-size candy bars seem harmless -- and they are, if you can limit your consumption. But that's easier said than done. All it takes is an additional 100 calories a day or the equivalent of one snack-sized chocolate bar and most adults will experience weight creep before they even know it.
Here are some tips to help you navigate the post-Halloween candy glut:
Savor one piece of your favorite candy a day. Decide what time of day you most relish the sweet stuff, and save your special treat for that time. Then sit back and slowly savor the taste sensation. "It is so easy to pop a piece of candy into your mouth mindlessly and not get the full enjoyment you would get if you saved it and ate it when you know you will enjoy it the most. Indulge your sweet tooth on occasion, because denying yourself completely could lead to an all-out binge.
Chew gum. Sugarless gum gives your mouth a burst of sweet sensation for very few calories. Studies have shown that gum chewing can also help [you] relieve stress, mentally focus on tasks, satisfy a sweet tooth, overcome the urge to eat candy, and help manage hunger pangs to hold you over until your next meal.
Count the empty wrappers. It's so easy to pop fun-size candy bars into your mouth that you can lose track of how quickly the calories are adding up. If you keep the wrappers on your desk, it will remind you of how many you ate and hopefully inspire you to exercise moderation and stop after one or two.

Nutrition Hint--More Halloween Follow Up
Skip the post-Halloween candy clearance sales
Say "no" to half price candy during post-Halloween sales. Just because you're getting a deal doesn't mean the candy is worth it.
The extra calories and sugar will have the same unwanted effect whether you've paid full or half price for the candy.
Learn to be okay with throwing candy away
Once trick-or-treating is over, throw the extra candy away! Whatever your reason for keeping it around is realistically just an excuse.
Keep it out of the office
Don't bring your extra candy to the office or teacher's lounge, and don't keep it out for friends, family members or customers.
If you don't want the candy at home as a constant temptation, other people probably don't want it around them either.

Metabolism Retraining Hint--Hooping It Up

A friend of mine began "hooping" at the age of 81 with a weighted hula hoop she purchased from a sporting goods store and urged me to try it. Now, not to brag but when I was in the 6th grade I did win the gold medal in our playground olympics for hooping for 60 minutes non-stop so when I was approached about this is I was all over it. I did a little research and thought I'd share it with you as well. ~Beth Hammond
Using a hula hoop, or "hooping," offers a workout that tones your body, burns calories, and improves cardiovascular fitness. Many people start for the fitness and weight loss benefits, but continue with a weighted hula hoop because it is a playful alternative to time on a treadmill. Hula hooping can tone your body and improve your overall fitness level.
Types
Weighted hula hoops vary in both size and weight. Lighter smaller hoops are harder to control and more challenging to balance and work with, while larger, heavier ones can be easier to use and keep moving, according to the Mayo Clinic. You can purchase hoops at discount stores, sporting goods stores or specialty retailers or make your own. Be sure that you visit the sporting goods section of the store, not the toy department, when looking for a hula hoop for fitness.
Function
You can integrate hooping into your weight loss exercise routine in various ways. Opt for a longer hooping video workout, like those offered by HoopGirl or just use your hoop for intense bursts of interval training, suggests "Consumer Reports." According to Hooping.org, you will burn 300 to 600 calories an hour hooping. Your body weight, the intensity of your routine, and the weight of the hoop will impact the total calorie burn.
Benefits
Using a weighted hula hoop doesn't just burn calories. It can also tone your core, hips and thighs, reports "Time" magazine's Catherine Sharick, author of "Hula Hoops: From Child's Play to Real Exercise," published September 25, 2009. Arm motions during hula hooping or hoop dancing may even tone your upper body, making this an enjoyable and effective workout.

Recipe of the Week--Potato Soup
With winter just around the corner, we have a couple of recipes you won't find in the Thin&Healthy Forever Cookbook using the supplement flavors (Broc O'Cheddar and Cream of Celery). They can be used simply as a delicious, warm addition to your lunch or dinner. Or you can use them as an entree.
Potato Soup
4 Medium potatoes, cubed
1 C. chopped onions
1 C. chopped celery
4 Cream of Celery supplement
4 C. water (to mix with supplements)
2 C. Skim Milk
salt and pepper to taste
Servings: 4
Mix water with supplements. Add milk, potatoes, onions, and celery. Bring to boil, then reduce heat to medium. Simmer for 30 minutes or until potatoes are tender. Add salt and pepper to taste.
Phase: Any
You can add Ground Turkey to make this an entree instead of a side dish:
1 lb Lean Ground Turkey
1/4 t. Garlic Powder
1/4 t. ground pepper
1/4 t. salt
Mix seasoning in with turkey. Brown turkey. Stir into soup with other ingredients. Bring to boil, then reduce heat to medium. Simmer for 30 minutes or until potatoes are tender.
