My story started with feeling a burning pain in my groin. Thinking it was just a strain, I ignored it for several months until it was apparent that it wasn't going away. Going to the doctor confirmed that I had testicular cancer, and the tumor markers signified that it had spread to other organs in the body.

 

After having the cancer removed I went back to my urologist for a follow-up consultation. He had met with a group of doctors in the area, and they all agreed that I needed a complete lymph node dissection, followed by a course of chemotherapy. I asked what a lymph node dissection was and he said that they cut you open from your chest to your pelvis. They then take out as many lymph nodes as possible.

Weight Loss Hint--Avoid Chronic Dehydration

Water isn't just "good for you" - water burns fat. Water suppresses hunger. Water renews your skin. Just drinking 12 ounces of pure water every day can take a few years off your face in a matter of weeks. You'll also drop fat, have more energy, and save your kidneys and liver from chronic overwork.

When your kidneys are taxed from too little water, your liver has to take over. Now, get this: Your liver is your number one fat-burning organ. Do you REALLY want it processing liquids and toxins rather than BURNING FAT? No way, right? Well, grab a glass of water (or more like 8, 8 ounces glasses at least every day), and watch the mirror. Within a few weeks, the change to your face and body will be noticeable.


 
Nutrition Hint--Surviving Summer Events 

Summer ushers in cookouts, company picnics and wedding buffets. While you can't always control the food offerings, you can prepare before heading out the door. Empty stomachs cause bad choices, so try eating a healthy, high-protein snack such as a hard-boiled egg before leaving. When you arrive, stick to nutritious options like lean meats, veggies and fruits instead of the higher calorie items.

Metabolism Retraining Hint--Family Fitness On The Beach
Turn those frequent trips to the beach into some family fitness time.  There are a lot of things you can do to increase your movement while frolicking in the sand. Walking on the beach is a great workout on it's own.  Add a little fun for the kids by looking for pretty shells or rocks depending upon where your beach is located. Playing racquet games, volleyball and Frisbee get the metabolism going.  Get in the water and have some fun body surfing or swimming along the shore. And one of my favorite activities to get everyone involved is having a scavenger hunt--it keeps everyone on their toes.

   
Recipe of the Week--Halibut with Kiwi Salsa

 Halibut with Kiwi Salsa

 

2 medium mangoes or 4 medium peaches, peeled and cubed (1-1/3 cups)

½ cup diced sweet red pepper

1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and minced*

1 tablespoon lime juice

2 teaspoons minced fresh mint or ¾ teaspoon dried mint

1 tablespoon olive or canola oil

¼ teaspoon chili powder

3 kiwi fruit, peeled and cubed (1 cup)

2 tablespoons lemon juice, divided

1 teaspoon honey

½ teaspoon light salt, divided

4 halibut filets or tuna steaks (6-ounces each)

 

For salsa: in a bowl, combine the mangoes, kiwi, red pepper, onion, jalapeno, 1 teaspoon lemon juice, lime juice, mint, honey and ¼ teaspoon salt. Cover and refrigerate until serving.

 

In a small bowl, combine the oil and remaining lemon juice, brush over both sides of fish. Sprinkle with chili powder and remaining salt. If grilling the fish, coat grill rack with nonstick cooking spray before starting the grill. Grill filets, covered, over medium heat or broil 6" from the heat for 5-7 minutes on each side or until fish flakes easily with a fork. Serve with Salsa.

 

*When cutting or seeding hot peppers, use rubber or plastic gloves to protect your hands. Avoid touching your face.

Bonus Recipe--Cherry Lemonade Super Slushie   

 

Cherry Lemonade Super-Slushie

Ingredients:

One Proti-15 Lemon cold drink supplement

2/3 of a cup frozen unsweetened dark sweet cherries (about 5 ounces)

2/3 cup crushed ice or 3-5 ice cubes

Directions:

In a tall glass, dissolve supplement in 1 cup cold water.

Transfer to a blender. Add cherries and ice and blend until mixed but still icy. Pour into

glass and enjoy!

Servings: 1
Fat Grams: 0
Protein: 15 grams
Phase: 3 and 4 (use strawberries to allow for other phases)
