What Are You Focusing On--The Darkness or the Light?

"I'm so sorry for all you had to face as a child," I said.

Kyle sat across the corner table from me eating his pancakes. It was about 15 years ago. He was home from college for the Christmas break.

He looked up at me. "What do you mean?"

"Sometimes it breaks my heart to think all you experienced so young. You struggled to fit in socially. The kids made fun of you. You had to help me as I recovered from cancer. Your parents divorced. And all of this happened the first 8 years of your life."

He leaned forward. "Mom, you don't understand. Do you? ... That's what made me who I am today. I'm a stronger, more compassionate person because of it."

Kyle was right. I was focused on all he had lost as a young child. He was focused on what he had gained.

Focus is a powerful thing. What we focus on gets bigger and bigger, while what we ignore fades in the background.

What are you focusing on this Christmas? The darkness or the light?

My prayer is that you will focus intentionally on the beauty and the light of the season. May the light and hope of Christ shine in your heart and mind today and each day of the coming year.

For God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness,"made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.
(2 Corinthians 4:6, NIV)

Article Headline

A friend of mine is writing a book on how people get through difficult life experiences and wants to interview at least one person in each of the following categories:

  1. Someone who has been sued;
  2. Someone who has been deeply in debt or declared bankruptcy and repaid all his/her creditors;
  3. Someone whose home or business has been destroyed by a natural disaster;
  4. Someone who has been a prisoner of war or a hostage;
  5. Someone who was a sexually exploited child;
  6. Someone with a severe physical disability;
  7. Someone who lives in constant pain;
  8. Someone who witnessed a terrorist attack (like the Virginia Tech shootings);
  9. Someone whose relatives, in-laws or colleagues turn others against them.

If you have experienced any of the above and would be willing to be interviewed after the holidays, please contact Zoe Hicks at 404 788-1719 or zoe.hicks1@gmail.com.
