March madness is already upon us.  It will be filled with exciting moments from recuperating from Spring Break, basketball tournaments, St. Patrick Day, summer enrollment, seminars, and exams.

PSY Faculty In the News...
Sleep-deprived people are much more likely to sign false confessions than rested individuals, according to a groundbreaking study that has important implications for police interrogation practices.
The odds of signing a false confession were 4.5 times higher for participants who had been awake for 24 hours than for those who had slept eight hours the night before.
Led by Kimberly M. Fenn, associate professor of psychology at Michigan State University, the study is published in this week's Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

PSY 382 - General Internship
Summer 2016 - APPLY TODAY
Whether you intend to start a career after graduation or attend graduate school, it is imperative that you gain experience to make you more marketable in these arenas. This internship is for students who desire experience in an area related to the field of Psychology. This can be very broad because Psychology touches on many fields, but all areas need to be approved in advance by the department to make sure that they follow the goals of the program.

PSY 381 & 382 - Human Service Internship
Spring 2017 & Summer 2017
This course is designed for the student planning for a career working directly with people in need. It teaches you how to effectively help people in direct-service situations, whether through non-profit organizations (e.g., homeless shelters, domestic abuse programs, refugee services, foster care services) or government jobs (e.g., child protective services, welfare office). The class uses lectures, discussions, guest speakers, videos, homework, in class assignments, and tests to enhance your understanding of the material. Attendance is extremely important and will be strictly enforced. This course is a two semester commitment and students must agree to sign up for both semesters in order to be allowed into the course.

Summer Research Opportunities:
Yale summer research, spearheaded by Dr. Yarrow Dunham, research in the Social Cognitive Development Lab focuses on children's understanding of the social world-what do kids understand about how individuals and groups relate to one another? Graduate Programs:
The University of Toledo School Psychology Program is accepting applications for students interested in beginning studies in the specialist-level program fall semester 2016. The final application deadline is May 15th.

The Master of Health Informatics program is a two-year, residential graduate program at the University of Michigan. Health Informatics is one of the fastest growing fields in the nation, and our graduates are in very high demand among employers: 100% of our graduates begin a career in their chosen field within six months of graduation, with an average starting salary of $70,000 per year.
Applicants from all academic and professional backgrounds are welcome and encouraged to apply. Current MHI students represent a wide range of backgrounds, including social sciences, natural sciences, life sciences, engineering, business, and the health professions.

Funding your College Education
Internship Reflection Award
Are you interested in reflecting on your Psychology Internship experience? If so, you could win 1,500 dollars through the College of Social Science Dean's Choice Grant. This grant is sponsored by MSU Federal Credit Union and is looking for College of Social Science undergraduate students who have completed or are currently enrolled in an academic internship course. Students are asked to submit a digital (video, blog,  or website) reflection of their experience that clearly highlights the value of their academic internship. UAW Cal Rapson Endowed Scholarship
MSU is pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for the UAW Cal Rapson Endowed Scholarship and Fellowship for the 2016-17 academic year.
The program is open to all MSU students whose parent(s) have been UAW members in good standing for 2 years or for students who themselves have been UAW members in good standing for 2 years.

The  Presidential Fellows Program have been going to Washington, D.C. to learn about leadership and governance, to share their outstanding research and scholarship, and to develop as future leaders of character. This is a unique non-resident program offering up to seventy-five top undergraduate and graduate students from leading colleges and universities across the country a year-long opportunity to study the U.S. Presidency, the public policy making process, and our Chief Executive's relations with Congress, allies, the media, and the American public. 
Deadline is March 27th.

Washington DC Study Away
Are you looking for an internship experience that will take you to the next level?  MSU's Washington, DC Semester Study Program is designed to do just that!
You can live, learn and become a professional in Washington, DC all while earning 12 MSU credits from a selection of over 40 courses during fall or spring semester.  Application deadline extended to March 31, 2016.

PSY Academic Advising
 Enrollment for the upcoming year will soon begin.  The Registrar Office will post on your Stuinfo your enrollment dates and times.
The PSY advisors will be very busy with appointments and walk-ins.  Check the on-line advising system for availability.
Please keep in mind that walk-ins are offered from 1-3 PM, and is limited to 15 minutes. 
Also check the Schedule of Courses for future planning and course availability.  Come prepared for your advising session. 
PSY 371 - 372: ADP
The Michigan State University Adolescent Program, Psychology 371/372, is a 2 semester course (4 credits each) that provides you with the opportunity to work one-on-one with an adolescent from the community who is referred by the juvenile court. The Adolescent Project consists of a semester of training and a semester of supervised field work.
We are looking for 20-25 students for this Summer/Fall and Fall/Spring cohorts. If you are interested or want to learn more about this opportunity please contact the program director, Sean Hankins.
