ELA Summer Reading Expectations

All Language Arts classes will utilize the summer reading assignments for instructional purposes during the first 1-3 weeks of school.

Incoming 5th graders: Students are required to read a book with at least 100 pages. The book selected is student choice.

Incoming 6th graders: Students are required to read a book with at least 200 pages. The book selected is student choice.

Why does CISD expect students to

read during the Summer?

Students who do not read during the summer often regress in their reading fluency and skills.
Are exposed to quality literature that will support their first few weeks of learning in the fall semester.
Continue to develop skills in independent reading, inquiry, and scholarship which will serve them in all aspects of their education. Literature Genre Options:

Why DIS Posts?

DIS Posts are an electronic newsletter published each week by the Durham Parent Teacher Organization. The newsletter is published in a simple, clean, bulleted format so parents can quickly scan and take note of all the new and exciting events, activities, academic achievements & deadlines occurring at DIS.

Often times school flyers, volunteer sign-up opportunities & helpful links are embedded within the posts for your convenience.
