Kids and Chefs Cook for Success-Let's Move! Elyse Cohen, 11/25/2014.

During this year's 3rd Annual Kids' State Dinner, the First Lady announced the Kids and Chefs Cook for Success collaboration. Through this initiative, each of the 54 Kids' State Dinner winners were paired with a chef in their community to host free, healthy cooking demonstrations to support efforts to build and teach basic cooking skills. The work of these dynamic duos has inspired kids, families, and communities across the nation to try their hand at preparing healthier meals at home. The cooking demonstrations have begun, and we couldn't be more impressed with the talented pairs! Read more.

This Month's Highlight!

 

On November 13th, the Training Team in partnership with Arizona Department of Health Services traveled to Central Arizona College in Casa Grande, AZ for an Empower Schools Training. The training consisted of discussions and interactive activities pertaining to Empower Schools and the Comprehensive School Physical Activity Program model. Thank you to Martha Petty, Chris Nogami, and Carl Thompson who represented the Flowing Wells School District, Amanda Harris who represented Sunnyside School District, Iris Alvarado from Cochise County Health Department, Brian Eller from Pima County Health Department and, Lauren McCullough from UANN for attending this training!

The Farm to School Program-USDA
New Policy Memo-Farm to School and School Garden Expenses

The student that has planted, tended, and harvested kale in a school garden is much more likely to try that kale when it shows up on the serving line in the school cafeteria. To answer questions about using school food service funds in support of school gardens and other farm to school efforts, USDA recently released a new memo, Farm to School and School Garden Expenses Q&As.

Media-Smart Youth is an interactive after-school program for young people ages 11-13. This program is designed to help teach students about the media world and how it can affect their health--especially in the areas of nutrition and physical activity. Saucony Run for Good Foundation

Deadline: December 13, 2014

The Saucony Run For Good Foundation is committed to informing the public about the cause and prevention of childhood obesity and provides funding to optimize the impact and success of community organizations that promote running and healthy-lifestyle programs for youth. Approximately 10-20 grants are awarded each year. Nonprofit organizations that demonstrate the program positively impacts the lives of participants through their increased participation in running are eligible to apply.


 

The Wal-Mart Foundation

Deadline: December 31, 2014

The Wal-Mart Foundation supports programs and initiatives addressing hunger relief & healthy eating; sustainability; women's economic empowerment; and career opportunity. Nonprofit organizations, K-12 schools, church or faith based organizations, and government entities are eligible to apply. 

  

 

RGK Foundation
Deadline: Rolling (Letter of Inquiry Required)
The RGK Foundation awards grants in the broad areas of education, community and health/medicine. Youth development programs supported by the Foundation typically include after-school enrichment programs.
