October, 2013

Thank you for your continued support of my monthly newsletter! It is certainly my pleasure to bring them to you each month.

As the seasons change, chronic headaches can become more frequent. This has a lot to do with changes in lifestyle, changes at work, and changes to diet, but there can also be other problems you may not be aware of.

This month, I want to focus on chronic headaches and explain how massage therapy can help eliminate the discomfort most people just endure.

Massage: The Key to Relieving Headaches

Everyone gets headaches. Stress, illness, fatigue, eyestrain - these are all common causes of headaches. Headaches can come and go or they can linger for long periods of time.

Unfortunately, some people suffer from chronic headaches, which reoccur for days, weeks and even months. Massage therapy has been proven to alleviate these chronic headaches in a completely natural way.

Two types of chronic headaches are most common among Americans: muscle tension headaches and vascular headaches.
  • Muscle tension headaches are characterized by a constant dull pain on both sides of the head. Sometimes the crown of the head and neck is involved. This type of headache usually starts slowly and can last anywhere from hours to days. People often describe the pain as "tightening bands" around the base of their skull or forehead. This is because the muscles of the head, face and neck are, in fact, tightening to create the pain.
  • Vascular headaches are characterized by pounding or throbbing. This is due to the swelling of blood vessels that supply the brain and the muscles of the head. Usually this type of headache gets worse with physical activity. Again, it can last any where from a few hours to several days.
How Can Massage Therapy Help Relieve
Chronic Headaches?

One of the first things we do when seized with a headache is massage our temple. Rubbing the sides of the temple provides soothing relief and can help the pain pass. So you see - it's our natural instinct to use massage as a remedy for headaches.

Professional massage therapists, of course, go far beyond simply rubbing your temple (although this may also be included). A good massage therapist knows the exact points to target, which range from the bottom and top of the skull, the sides of the forehead, the base of the neck, the shoulders, and even the spine.

Massage therapy treats the headache by easing muscle tension, relaxing shortened muscles, and calming muscle spasms within the head, shoulders, neck and upper back. Once the muscles have relaxed and released, the pressure on nerves and blood vessels also disappears. This stimulates oxygenated blood flow to the area, which relieves the pain.

Another specific approach to relieving chronic headaches is CranioSacral massage. CranioSacral massage is the gentle manipulation of the skull and spine to release restrictions in the fascial tissues that surround every muscle, nerve and bone in the body.

One of the central points in CranioSacral therapy is the foramen magnum located at the base of the skull. A skilled massage therapist can release the entire nervous system from stress by resolving deep tension patterns around the foramen magnum. Think of it as the body's magic key that unlocks the secret to relief.

CranioSacral massage is especially effective in relieving chronic headaches. The technique normalizes automatic nervous activity while stimulating blood flow to the area, relieving your pain. In addition to the physiological benefits, CranioSacral massage also relieves stress and anxiety, which is often the cause of headaches in the first place.
