BigTown Gallery is pleased to present this solo exhibition of collage by Marcus Ratliff.
Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Ratliff moved to New York to Study painting at the Cooper Union, and after, at the Yale School of Art. During the early sixties he was immersed in the rising tide of the New York art world. Successful development in his early working years as a graphic designer enabled him to build a graphic design studio and work for some of the finest art establishments for almost 40 years, designing books and catalogs for clients such as, Leo Castelli, The Museum of Modern Art, P.S. 1, Whitney Museum of American Art, The Hudson River Museum, Museum of Primitive Art, Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, The Phillips Collection, Storm King Art Center, and DIA Center For the Arts.
Since 2008, Marcus Ratliff who now residents in Vermont, has enjoyed an intense and prolific return to making art without assignment. This exhibition focuses on the development of his turn to collage where he has blended his knowledgeable precision of design, with his intuitive discovery of a new vision. We are delighted to present this humorous and intriguingly elegant body of work.
Please join us in celebrating the artist for a reception: Saturday, May 10, 2014 5-7

Bennington Museum, Bennington, VT New wing at the museum: Bennington Modernism
"Change - not for the sake of change itself, but changing in order to be a vital, living organization, constantly relevant to the people and to a changing world." Robert Wolterstorff, Executive Director, Bennington Museum.
In keeping with this goal of the museum's mission, the Bennington Modernism Gallery re-opened on February 14 with newly installed paintings by Paul Feeley, Helen Frankenthaler and Jules Olitski. These join works from the early 1950s through the mid-1970s that were created by a group of avant-garde artists working in and around Bennington, leading the nation in artistic thought and innovation. Among the artists of national and international stature with local ties are Pat Adams, Paul Feeley, Vincent Longo, Anthony Caro, and now iconic works by Helen Frankenthaler and Jules Olitski. Only their embrace of abstraction and a common desire to move beyond Abstract Expressionism, which had dominated the American art scene since the mid-1940s, united this disparate group of artists. Collectively they explored such diverse strategies as Color Field painting, Minimalism, an early Conceptualism, and even proto-Pop.
Among those new to the gallery are Silver Coast, 1958 by Helen Frankenthaler and Revery, 1965 by Jules Olitski.
Then end on to the Fleming: The Fleming Museum of Art, University of Vermont - Contemporary Voices of Vermont dates TBA but coming soon...

Follow the link to this page of events at the Toledo Museum of Art honoring, exploring and highlighting the life and work of Varujan Boghosian. Included: a wonderful conversation with the museum's director, Brian Kennedy, in front of a very large, very appreciative Toledo audience in February.
Besides the wonderfully playful juxtaposition of artworks from the TMA's permanent collection, with those of the artist in an exhibition in the elegant Wolfe Gallery Mezzanine; a replication of Boghosian's studio in the museum's main floor gallery, Gallery 18, was reconstructed with hundreds of objects shipped from Hanover to Ohio for the museum's ongoing educational outreach. It was a huge hit with visitors young and old who had the opportunity to think and work like the great artist himself.
The Toledo Museum of Art is certainly worth the visit. I'd love to go back - wish it were closer. The exhibit is in until May 25th. Unfortunately the DIY studio has closed up. You do, however, have a month to see this wonderful show. If you can get to Toledo, you really should go!

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS - In support of local arts and good work initiatives:
A New, Alternative Artist Residency in Stockbridge, VT
This summer, founder Otto Pierce (Vermont native, dancer, and Middlebury College student) will direct the thrilling first year of a new, alternative, off-the-grid artist residency, The Sable Project. Otto purchased 15 acres of undeveloped land in Stockbridge in 2013, and was inspired by the freedom it offered. On his land, he dreamed of fostering art and ideas by removing the usual limits--time, space, and food--that prevent artists from creating. The concept for The Sable Project was born.
The project is a unique residency--one that revolves around collaboration and awareness of environment. It will consist of a small, off-the-grid community without electricity, internet, or cell phone service, where artists will be asked to dive into the unknown and embrace fresh influences. Between June and August, twelve artists from across the disciplines will come to live, work, and collaborate on The Sable Land. The participating artists are an eclectic group, including sculptors, dancers, writers, musicians, print-makers, photographers, painters, and more. Removed from the patterns of their daily lives, the artists' creative processes and art will change to reflect the experience of living simply and working with a close group of people. They will help build a studio and a stage, as well as grow food in the organic Sable Garden. Trust and cooperation, essential to survival on The Sable Land, will also enrich their collaboration. A final performance/exhibit in August will showcase both individual and collaborative work. Through radical environment and intimate community, Sable aspires to create a space that simultaneously challenges and supports artists focused on creating daring, elegant, and powerful art.
Recently, The Sable Project took another step forward, and launched their Indiegogo crowd fundraiser (an online platform used to raise funds by offering donors perks as rewards for their contributions). By the end of the campaign on May 25th, The Sable Project hopes to raise $10,000 to cover expenses including food, building, and art supplies. To learn more about the project or donate visit the Indiegogo page at https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/the-sable-project.
