Dear MLEPC Members and Friends,

Thirty years ago, Madonna was named the top pop artist, fueled in part by her mega-hit "Material Girl," in which she proclaimed:

...we are
Living in a material world
And I am a material girl.
You know that we are living in a material world
And I am a material girl.

Cash, clothes, cars. It was a sign of the times, I suppose. The stock market boomed, and new credit cards were invented because the old ones didn't seem prestigious enough.

Jesus seemed to have a different idea. Oh, He talked a lot about money. Obviously He thought it was an important thing. After all, it shows us where people's hearts are.

"For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." -- Mt 6:21.

Taking His cue, the early church saw the material world as a profoundly spiritual thing.

All the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. (Acts 2:44-45)

It seems they didn't rail against material things, and they didn't worship them, either. They saw them as a tool to accomplish something significant for Christ's Kingdom.

This Sunday we are continuing our sermon series on God's New Community--a look at Acts 2, the Golden Age of the Church. We will look at the special work God was doing among His people, and I expect God will teach us important lessons about how to live in this material - and profoundly spiritual - world.
