Dear MLEPC Members and Friends:

It's Holy Week and we are drawing near to our Easter Sunday celebration. This publication will reach many of us on Thursday, if we receive it electronically, and on Friday, if we get it via ground mail. This gives me one final chance to invite us to join in the very special worship and fellowship opportunities we have planned in these next few days. Here is the schedule:

  • Maundy Thursday--All church dinner in the Fellowship Hall at 6:00 p.m. to be followed by worship with communion in the Sanctuary at 7:00 p.m. Pastor Steve will preach God's Word.

  • Good Friday Community Service--to be held across the street at Mt. Lebanon United Methodist Church from 12:00--1:00 p.m. We join with four other churches to worship. Our MLEPC choir will join with singers from the other church choirs to lead in music. Pastor Lee Clark will deliver a short message as a representative of our church.

  • Good Friday Evening Service--We gather at 7:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary. Our Teacher in Residence, Dr. Bruce Bickel, will preach. Communion will be served. And we shall hold a "Service of Tenebrae" as we extinguish all lights in the Sanctuary until we then leave in darkness and silence at the end--always a moving faith experience.

  • Prayer Vigil--We invite you to come to the Sanctuary on Friday night between 9 p.m. and midnight or in the Chapel Saturday morning between 7 a.m. and 12 noon for time of private worship. Pray, meditate, sing, read scripture, and consider the love of God for you in sending Jesus to die and rise. In addition, a Holy Saturday group prayer time will convene in the Parlor between 9 and 10 a.m., if you wish to pray with others.

  • Easter Sunday--our great day of celebration! We hold Contact and Heritage worship services at their usual times. Come to one or even to both. They complement each other in helping us to experience the joy of Jesus alive. In between, join us for our Easter brunch in the Fellowship Hall. No charge, just good food and friendship shared.

I encourage us to participate in all of these options. These four days are among the most special times of worship and observance among Christians around the world and have been for thousands of years. It is a good time for us to take extra time to draw close to the Lord, setting aside other things in life that honestly can wait until next week. I plan to be part of everything! I hope to see you and our church family as we go to the deepest depths in His death and rise to the highest heights in His resurrection.

As we enter into this time of reverence and rejoicing, here is a great passage of Scripture that captures both themes. Take time to think and pray on it in these coming days:

And being found in appearance as a man,

He humbled Himself

and became obedient to death--

even death on a cross!

Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place

and gave Him the name

that is above every name,

that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,

in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,

to the glory of God the Father!

(Philippians 2:8-11)

Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter Sunday--Come, let us worship the Lord!
