Sermon Title:
"The Prodigal Son"

Scripture:
Luke15:11-32

We continue our weekly series on the mission and ministry of MLEPC: 4 +3 = 1. We are people of four life stages (children, youth, adults, senior adults), called by God to reach three directions (upward, outward, inward), all in order to be one growing church family to the glory of God. Yes, 4 +3 =1! This week, we take a look at life stage four through the eyes of our Senior Adult Ministry Associate, Laura Duffy. - Pastor Tim

Dear MLEPC Members and Friends:

It is with excitement that I write to you this week about the fourth life stage, Senior Adult Ministry, at MLEPC. Our ministry, once defined as "from retirement to glory," now includes those 243 members who are 55 years old and up. Although, to me, 55 seems awfully young to be considered a senior! The Senior Adult Ministry, also known as S.A.M., has been the beneficiary of the Sperry Cameron Horne fund which is specifically designated to help meet the needs of our senior adults.

Senior Adult Ministry reaches upward to God through many of the classes and small groups that meet regularly to study the Word of God. These groups include the Cornerstone and Lamplighters Sunday school classes, Women's small group Bible studies, and the Thursday morning men's group.

Our seniors can be seen reaching outward to the world in witness and service not only here at MLEPC but in the various neighborhoods and retirement communities in which they live. Many of our homebound members participate in Bible studies, attend worship, and even enjoy singing with the choir in their respective retirement communities. The ladies' sewing group provides Allegheny County Youth and Family Services with clothes protectors, bed pads and teddy bears. The Comfort Stitchers Ministry, which is attended primarily by seniors, has distributed over 250 prayer shawls and lap robes to those in need. The Cornerstone and Lamplighters' Sunday school classes have reached outward to the world from their inception with their financial and prayer support of various missionaries and agencies both internationally, nationally and regionally.

MLEPC's seniors continue to reach inward to their fellow brothers and sisters here at MLEPC in response to Hebrews 13:16, "And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased." Many of our seniors serve our church by sitting on the elder, deacon and trustee boards. In addition, our seniors can be found volunteering in the kitchen, at the front desk, in the nursery, teaching Sunday school and also volunteering during the weeks of VBS and Mission Possible. Perhaps the greatest way our seniors reach inward is by their encouragement and example of Christ's presence in their lives. We are truly blessed to have such a wonderful senior presence here at MLEPC!

In Him,

Laura Duffy
