International assessments are hot, but what they leave out (or metaphorically below the waterline) is as important as what they include. Join leaders from the Horace Mann League and the Superintendents Roundtable to get an embargoed, advance look at a new study on education indicators. You'll learn a lot-and be able to discuss these issues like a pro when local press turns to you with questions.

The 2015 RHSU Edu-Scholar Public Influence Rankings  by Rick Hess in the EDWeek blog

Simply being included among the 200 ranked scholars is an honor, given the tens of thousands who might be included. The list of qualifying scholars includes a qualitative component, though the actual scores are composed entirely of quantitative metrics. The rankings include the top 150 finishers from last year's rankings, along with 50 "at-large" nominees chosen by a selection committee of 31 automatic qualifiers

Teachers faced an unprecedented level of scrutiny in 2014, thanks to a landmark legal case dismantling teacher tenure in California, which is likely to spark copycats lawsuits across the country. In part due to this increased scrutiny, educators also encountered various attacks from mainstream and conservative media over the year, five of which were particularly egregious.

And more.

Changing a Culture Inside and Out of School  by John Buntin  in the Governing States and Localities website
Fixing a failing school may require a complete change in culture. That's not an easy thing to achieve, but Memphis is trying.  Effective leadership, autonomy, good teachers and longer school days. The iZone schools have made all of the moves that education reformers like to see schools make. They also added a new component to the mix: content-coaching and constant support. And they've done all that within the context of traditional public schools.

A Fresh Approach to Ranking States on Education  by By The Education Week Research Center in EDWeek.
incorporates three key indices developed by the Education Week Research Center. TheChance-for-Success Index provides a cradle-to-career perspective on the role that education plays in promoting positive outcomes throughout a person's life. The school finance analysis assesses spending patterns and equity. Both categories have been updated for this year's report. The K-12 Achievement Index, last updated in 2014, rates states on current academic performance, change over time, and poverty-based gaps.

The United States has lost ground among developed nations in promoting quality education for its students. To counter this troubling trend, the Council of Chief State School Officers and the National Governors Association worked to create a state-led program called the Common Core State Standards. Common Core is intended to ensure that all American children receive a quality, rigorous education. Although education policy is becoming increasingly uniform across the county, state school systems are still far from equal.

A Practitioner's Guide to Implementing Early Warning Systems  by Sarah Frazelle and Aisling Nagel of the Northwest Regional Education Lab.
Every 26 seconds a teenager drops out of school in the United States. To stem the tide, many districts and organizations are turning to early warning systems (EWS) that signal whether a student is at risk of not graduating from high school. While some research exists about establishing these systems and creating indicators, there is less information about actual implementation strategies that are being used across the country.

The new U.S. Congress is moving post haste to reauthorize the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). With Republicans in the majority in both houses and the relevant committees chaired by individuals with considerable legislative skills (Lamar Alexander in the Senate and John Kline in the House) the smart money is on Obama seeing a bill in this session.

Contending that a Rutgers professor and public schools advocate has used her position, title and state university resources to wage a personally driven campaign against them, a group representing the state's charter schools has filed an ethics complaint against the Save Our Schools NJ co-founder.

A Gift:  On the Art of Teaching   by Horace Mann

In 1840 Mann wrote On the Art of Teaching. Some of HML members present On the Art of Teaching to new teachers as part of their orientation program.  On the inside cover, some write a personal welcome message to the recipient.  Other HML members present the book to school board members and parental organizations as a token of appreciation for becoming involved in their schools.  The book cover can be designed with the organization's name.  For more information, contact the HML (Jack McKay)
