International assessments are hot, but what they leave out (or metaphorically below the waterline) is as important as what they include. Join leaders from the Horace Mann League and the Superintendents Roundtable to get an embargoed, advance look at a new study on education indicators. You'll learn a lot-and be able to discuss these issues like a pro when local press turns to you with questions.

This study concludes that, compared to the average voter in Washington, an elite group of wealthy individuals, either directly through individual donations or indirectly through their affiliated philanthropic organizations, wielded disproportionate influence over the outcome of the charter school initiative in the state, thereby raising serious concerns about the democratic underpinnings of an education policy that impacts all of the children in Washington State.

Half of public school students are kids of color. So why are over 80% of their teachers white?

Nationwide, we have a teacher diversity problem. This year, for the first time in our country's history,a majority of public school students are children of color. But most teachers-82 percent in the 2011-2012 school year-are white. That figure hasn't budged in almost a decade.

The knee-jerk response is to blame the minority teacher shortage on inadequate recruitment efforts. But key data suggests that we also have a largely unacknowledged and unaddressed problem with retention. In other words, our schools are churning and burning teachers of color at unconscionably high rates.

The Global Search for Education: What's the Secret to Canada's Success?   by C. M. Rubin  on the Huff Post blog

"Effects of socio-economic status on educational outcomes can be mitigated, and this can be done on a whole-school and system-wide basis by the very people and the same schools where low performance was once the norm.was, in Ontario, the product of attention to research, and committed collaboration by educators focused on improved instruction and precision in meeting student needs." -- Mary Jean Gallagher

In 2003, the provincial government of Ontario, Canada initiated a focus on educational improvement as one of its key strategies for the future success of its people and its economy. Since then, the entire system has dramatically improved. As part of The Global Search for Education series on education system transformations, today we explore the secrets to Ontario's success.

10 ways to use Pinterest for your business   By Jon Accarrino on the PR Daily website

Unless you've been meditating with some monks in Tibet for the last few months, you've probably at least heard of Pinterest.
The virtual "pinboard" social network exploded this winter and went from fewer than 1 million users to 150 million in just six months. The simple functionality of easily sharing and organizing photo and video content fulfilled the original promise of media-based social networks such as Flickr, making Pinterest a huge hit with users.

Arizona sold 10,376 student season tickets this year. But 47.6 percent of those students, for an average game, didn't even show up.   It's not just happening at Arizona. It's an issue everywhere. Despite the NCAA celebrating an overall attendance record due to an increased number of programs, crowds topped out at an average of 46,456 fans per game in 2008, with attendance for FBS schools dropping below 46,000 per game for the past five seasons. But even more alarming: In analyzing the demographics of the college football crowd, athletic directors and marketers alike have been most baffled by the student population.

As globalization and technological advances bring us hurtling towards a new integrated future, Ian Goldin warns that not all people may benefit equally. But, he says, if we can recognize this danger, we might yet realize the possibility of improved life for everyone.

A Gift:  On the Art of Teaching   by Horace Mann

In 1840 Mann wrote On the Art of Teaching. Some of HML members present On the Art of Teaching to new teachers as part of their orientation program.  On the inside cover, some write a personal welcome message to the recipient.  Other HML members present the book to school board members and parental organizations as a token of appreciation for becoming involved in their schools.  The book cover can be designed with the organization's name.  For more information, contact the HML (Jack McKay)
