How great leaders inspire action  by Simon Sinek on TED
Simon Sinek: How great leaders inspire action
Simon Sinek: How great leaders inspire action
Simon Sinek presents a simple but powerful model for how leaders inspire action, starting with a golden circle and the question "Why?" His examples include Apple, Martin Luther King, and the Wright brothers -- and as a counterpoint Tivo, which (until a recent court victory that tripled its stock price) appeared to be struggling.

In American School Reform: What Works, What Fails, and Why, Joseph P. McDonald and the Cities and Schools Research Group propose a framework for understanding the adoption, implementation, and ultimate collapse of school reform initiatives. This theoretical model identifies a "theory of action space," within which resources, professional capacity, and civic capacity interact with arguments in such a way to make reform possible.  Despite the theory's seemingly ambiguous title, the theory of action space is a distinctive, specific, and practical model for the analysis of district-level school reforms. Drawing on open-systems theory, the authors emphasize the dependence of organizations on their environment and embrace a process orientation.

Obama Unveils Immigration Plan, Lifts Deportation Threat for Millions   by Corey Mitchell on the Education Week blog

By offering temporary legal status to an estimated 5 million undocumented immigrants, along with an indefinite reprieve from deportation, Obama's action will ease longstanding concerns among educators about separating school-aged children from their parents and guardians.

The order will offer deportation reprieves and working papers to undocumented parents of children who are either U.S. citizens or have legal residency here and who have lived in the United States for at least five years.

The Politics of "Pre-K" by Alla Wong  in the Atlantic Monthly
of all 3- and 4-year-olds across the country are enrolled in any sort of early education, largely because of how pricey these programs can be. That's a shame, advocates argue, considering the research showing the positive, long-term impact a quality early-education experience can have on a child's life-all the more so if that child comes from a low-income family. In particular, these advocates want every child to have the opportunity to attend prekindergarten.

We are many. There is power in our Numbers. Together we will save our Schools  by Diane Ravitch and Bill Moyer on Network for Public Education.  Click on the video link below.
Public Schools for Sale?
Public Schools for Sale?
Public education is becoming big business as bankers, hedge-fund managers and private-equity investors are entering what they consider to be an "emerging market." Preeminent education historian Diane Ravitch, a former assistant secretary of education, says the privatization of public education has to stop. She was an advocate school choice and charter schools, but after careful investigation, has changed her mind.

Publishers have agreed to correct or remove inaccurate passages about climate change in new social studies textbooks proposed for Texas public schools, a coalition of science and education groups announced this afternoon.  The revisions will reflect the overwhelming consensus among climate scientists that climate change is a real and growing threat and that human activity is the primary driver of the problem.

Sacramento and the Death of the Common School   by Diane Ravitch on the Ravitch blog

There was once an ideal in American education, which held that the community public school would be a place where children of every background would meet, learn together, and learn to live amicably. This ideal was supposed to promote a sense of American citizenship, a realization that regardless of our origins, we are all Americans.

Ninth Circuit Grants Freidrichs' Motion: Next Stop - Supreme Court on the CIR (Center for Civil Rights) website

A three judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit issued an order granting the plaintiffs' Motion for Summary Affirmance on the Pleadings. That means Rebecca Friedrichs and her co-plaintiffs are now free to petition the Supreme Court for review of their challenge to compulsory union dues. From the beginning, Friedrichs and her co-plaintiffs have argued that the only court that has the authority to grant them the relief they request is the Supreme Court.

Calling for a "reboot" of public education in Minnesota, hundreds of thousands of dollars flowed into the Minneapolis school board elections this November to try ousting an incumbent and to usher in an education agenda that resembles that of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC).

The Character Factor:  Measures and Impact of Drive and Prudence  by Richard V. Reeves, Joanna Venator, and Kimberly Howard on the Center for Children and Families on the Brookings website

There is growing interest among psychologists and economists in the importance of 'non-cognitive' skills for doing well in life. In this paper we assess the quality of measures available in U.S. survey data for two specific non-cognitive skills, drive and prudence, which we term "performance character strengths" - non-cognitive skills that relate to outcomes important for economic mobility, such as educational attainment.

by Laurie Levy on the AlterNet Blog

It was an innocent question: "How's your school year going?" She's an experienced educator, teaching third grade this year in a highly regarded suburban district. So why did her eyes well up with tears during a casual conversation at a party? Did she have a tough class? Was she upset about a challenging child?

This woman used to love being a teacher, but the joy she felt in finding creative ways to reach her students has given way to sadness and stress. She is so upset about the direction her profession has taken that she is advising her teenage daughter not to go into education. She is so disillusioned she may quit after this school year.
