American policy makers are forging ahead with education initiatives, but they may be leaving Americans behind and out of the loop.

Parents overwhelmingly believe that public schools are the single most important institution for the future of their community and of our nation, and they choose strong neighborhood public schools over expanding choice, charters and vouchers.

Almost four decades ago, Ravitch emerged as a preeminent chronicler of, as she put it, "the rise and fall of grand ideas" in American education. The author of 11 books, including Reign of Error (out this month), she has traced the past century's successive battles over how best to deliver a quality education-and to whom.

A system called "stack ranking," in which employees on the same team competed directly with one another for money and promotions. Critics say this rewarded brown-nosing and sabotage over collaboration.

Students who attend school in the rural communities and small towns of five Southern states suffer the lion's share of all corporal punishment that takes place in the nation's public schools

What do international tests really show about U.S. student performance?  By Martin Carnoy and Richard Rothstein
However, conclusions, which are often drawn from international test comparisons, are oversimplified, frequently exaggerated, and misleading. They ignore the complexity of test results and may lead policymakers to pursue inappropriate and even harmful reforms.

The "loss aversion" theory goes like this: Instead of paying teachers a bonus if their students get higher scores (which has consistently failed for nearly a century), offer them a bonus upfront, then take it away if the scores don't go up. The theory is that the teachers won't want to lose the money they were already paid.

The problem highlighted and represented in these three examples involves several key flaws inherent in education reform being analyzed and driven by people without expertise and experience as educators themselves.

Following are some significant Supreme Court Decisions relating to students.  Cases range from prayer to diversity.

The promise of a $50 million bailout from the city has allowed district officials in Philadelphia to begin preparing for an event they had warned would not come on time: the opening of school.

Kountze Independent School District (KISD) is asking a Texas appellate court to clarify a recent ruling in a case involving high school cheerleaders using religious themes on banners at football games.

We're seduced into believing that brilliant thinkers are born that way. We think they magically produce brilliant ideas.  Nothing could be further from the truth. While there are likely genetic exceptions, the vast majority of the people we consider brilliant use their minds differently.

Is Pisa fundamentally flawed?

What if the statistical techniques used to compile it are "utterly wrong" and based on a "profound conceptual error"? Suppose the whole idea of being able to accurately rank such diverse education systems is "meaningless", "madness"?
