Because they refused to check the data - or even share it - with institutions ahead of time, they published badly flawed information without the fundamental concerns for accuracy that any serious research enterprise would insist upon.
. . . the deepening political, economic and moral deficit in America is inextricably connected to an education deficit, which is currently impacting young people most of all by starving them of both the economic resources and the formative educational experiences required to help them develop into knowledgeable and engaged citizens.
A national consortium of state politicians and powerful corporations, ALEC - the American Legislative Exchange Council - presents itself as a "nonpartisan public-private partnership". But behind that mantra lies a vast network of corporate lobbying and political action aimed to increase corporate profits at public expense without public knowledge.
Very quietly, a civil war is brewing within the education reform movement over a single issue: Evaluations for teachers at charter schools.
Money tends to distort reality. Those that have it think that they can use it to get what they want. And those that have a lot, think they can get a lot.
More stress is caused by evaluation systems and merit pay that require us to compete with our colleagues. This leaves us with feelings of guilt, much like a soldier would feel when ordered to take a part in "friendly fire". 
School prayer was banned by the US Supreme Court 50 years ago, but there is probably more presence of religion in public school environments - through club ministries, classes, after-school and interfaith programs, and faith-based services - than ever. 
. . . political demands for ever-shifting versions of reform, by market demands for efficiency, by smothering student debt loads, and by the mistaken priorities of colleges racing for prestige.
