We've heard it all from pundits before, "America's public schools are failing." But are they really? New data from a Stanford University study shed light on advantaged and disadvantaged students, explaining a big point that's been overlooked.
 
 

 The belief that the road to drastic improvement is paved with teacher dismissals has become something of an article of faith in many education policy circles, and it seems to play an inordinately important role in debate and decisions about teacher performance assessment in the U.S.
 
 There does seem to be some good evidence that if you change a child's neighborhood - but don't change his family circumstances or the family income level at his school - there won't be much of an effect on his test scores.
 
Research shows that letting students spend longer time exploring a topic before choosing helps them choose something worthy of inquiry. 
 
ALEC is a corporate-funded organization that works behind closed doors to create model bills that in the end favor corporate interests over the interests of the public sphere. It's goal is to promote the privatization of government services and that includes the public schools. 
 
Cuban identifies what he considers three positive outcomes of the last three decades of reforms inspired by the view that schools should follow business practices.
